I have an 05 Tacoma automatic two-wheel drive with a bad motor. I have an opportunity to get a 3.3 Auto out of a Solara for virtually nothing. Don't know anything about either motor but wondering if I can swap those? and how big a deal it would be?

    No.

A very big deal, even for a straight replacement swap (especially for a self-proclaimed "not a mechanic").

What happened to your motor, out of curiosity? This is the first 2.7 failure I've ever heard of.

Ran without coolant , burnt rings and who knows what else. Compression tested around 60 but does still turn over.

Non complex motor swap days are long gone. Even if you live in a free state. (Biannual Smog test). Computors, programming, harnesses, ecms, smog systems
Cut your teeth on pulling the 2.7 and tear it down to a short block and repair. About as basic as they come

That's a great idea. Am I correct in thinking that with the basic cast iron block, that motor would be conducive to head machining and resurfacing the cylinder walls if needed?

I don't know the technical term, but I'm imagining something beyond just honing them for new rings. (Or maybe that's all that's required).

This would be a great project if you have a second vehicle and a mechanic friend (or a good local mechanic).

Repair was the original plan but came across the 3.3 for trading out a little work so I thought I'd check my options. Thanks for the advise. I'll be back with plenty of questions once I start the repair im quit sure.
