Back in the day i bought a used 2 door 1963 327 chevy impala from a friends sister that was given to her by her parents to drive to college that had 60k miles. Best american car ever owned. Years later i bought a used 66 gto with about the same mileage from a private owner that was a state worker i knew nothing about. Boy did i ever get hosed....it was one thing after another for that car. Finally just unloaded it for a 78 toyota wolverine...been buying toyota's since. I can trust them to have world class reliability.

We read this story a lot. It's always a Corvette and never a 911

Ya, and I started watching more reviews and a couple things I noticed

    1. How is a 9 speed transmission only able to get 17mpg city and 19mpg combined? That’s worse than the 6speed Tacoma. Is it the higher truck weight?

    which leads to #2

    2. there were some reviews critical of the engine power. I’m assuming this might be due to a poor factory tune, and/or the extra truck weight. However, there were still more positive than critical reviews regarding engine power

No issues other than recalls, I drive an explorer for work and it's terrible. The transmission and the engine are quirky and I hate the stop/ start engine feature. Just saying none of them are perfect and all the pollution crap does not help.

Your truck must be not performing like it should. I can put mine on cruise control at 75 mph in 6th and it holds fine...just as my 2001 tundra did in 4th.

    Is this a joke...?
You are driving a brick 80-90mph and expect it to hold the highest gear and get good mpg?

I drive Phx/LA. Your right, the Tacoma doesn’t like 80. The engine struggles and gas mileage suffers. Of course it’ll do it, but the truck’s sweet spot is 70.

I also agree the stock seating position sucks. It’s not truck-like at all. Way too low and laid back. That ain’t a truck. Got Seat Jackers front AND rear and damn near raised the electric seat up and forward as far as it would go. Much better.

I think you need a full-sized truck for your own well being and happiness.

That's because it's not manual mode. When you put it in "S" mode, it doesn't lock it into that gear, it only lets it shift up to that gear. So if you put it in S1, it keeps you in first gear. If you put it in S2, it only shifts from 1st to second. If you put it in S6, you may as well keep it in drive.

s6 is useless unless you are cruising on flat highway. also it's pretty much the same thing as leaving it in "D". get some seat jackers. that fixes the seat angle.

I just read the first couple of pages and now I'm here. What did you end up doing about the truck?

I believe what you are looking for is a manual transmission. There are exceptions out there, but this is how automatic transmissions have always worked. It's no different than if you were to drop your 1st gen Tacoma from Drive down to 3.

On my truck there is no S6. You can put it in any S mode up to S5, and it will hold the gear till a certain rpm is reached and it will automatically upshift to the next gear if those rpm are exceeded....same for using S mode gears like 1st thru 4th when going down a steep grade. It basically will force you to use the brakes if the engine is too wound up. Imo, i think toyota did this to protect the engine from extended periods of excessive rpm.
