If you're big on retaining stock functionality, add an amp and replace the speakers. Toss an amplified sub like what Rockford Fosgate offers in the compartment behind the rear seats and it will sound better than the majority of "premium" sound systems offered by most manufacturers.

Mine with the stock head unit sounds better than the Mark Levinson in my wife's Lexus in many ways. The ML has more clarity but underwhelming every where else.

Crutchfield. Start there. Browse that for ideas.

Decide your budget. Decide whether you want to prioritize clarity at conversational volumes or boom-boom. Decide whether you are willing to sacrifice storage space, or strictly want to drop hardware into existing mounts. Also decide if you are willing to run wires yourself or if you are hiring a shop to do it.

Read through this for other ideas. It starts cheap, but a few substitutions to the original recipe will make it much better.

Hard to belive, especially with the road noise coming through the vents in the back

Her GX has all terrain tires so it's not exactly an LS when it comes to a vault.

"Stereo" can cover a lot of ground. Is your factory head unit broken, or you're looking to upgrade it? Or just upgrade the overall sound? I found a thread in the Audio forum here on TW, and lots of good advice there, plus you can see what others have done. I chose a simple upgrade for now based on a few recommendations in that forum. If you want to keep things stock looking and functioning and your factory head unit is still fine, I agree with a post above and just added a couple of small Kicker amps and an Alpine sub, and it sounds pretty good. Much louder and clearer, even with the stock speakers in the dash and doors, and far surpasses the sound quality and loudness of the JBL system that I had in my 4th Gen. The amp for the sub has a knob that can adjust the output, and that's been nice since not all my music needs mirror shaking bass, LOL. While the stock speakers surprised me with the small amp driving them, upgrading those may be my next step with a kit from Trail Grid Pro, but I'm pleased with the minimal investment vs sound output.

You'll lose functionality to your info-screen.

Get one of those giant obnoxious screens that replaces your climate controls and changes the two center vents so they don’t match

I wanted to upgrade my tunes in my 4Runner and did it via Crutchfield with a nice Kenwood Echelon and some Kickers, no amp. It sounded nice at lower volumes.

However, when I bought the Taco this year I went a different route. Keeping to a budget, I installed the Alpine 8" sub/amp package and upgraded all the speakers with Alpine as well, kept the Entune head unit. Let me tell ya', it sounds great! I went through Trailgrid pro for all of it. Simple plug and play, easy to follow install instructions, and didn't break the bank. They have some videos on the install, check it out

You don’t mention a specific reason you want to update your head unit. Make sure you have the latest Entune firmware for your current unit to see if it adds any additional functionality.
