    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Seriously? Please, go trade in your Tacoma for another FCA shitbox. I came from a shiney new GTI and before that, Jeep Wrangler JK. Both were honestly pieces of shit. The Wrangler had tin can sheetmetal and some interior plastics that rivaled mid-nineties Ford economy car interiors. The GTI was a nice car, but the build quality was on par with Kia. Not to mention the countless IS20 turbo failures and shitty resale of that car. The Wrangler held its value, but wasn't a quality vehicle. At 25k miles I could see that it was never going to hold up. Google "TIPM failure" and tell me about your dud. Give them a chance to fix it. It also sounds like you have a shit dealer. My local gave me a loaner and treated me well while resolving my few issues. Sucks that you feel this way, but these trucks are still better than a majority of the other options.

First of all, thanks for the opinions and such from everyone. Thread wasn't started to get a pissing match going. It was for ideas and maybe warnings and info for current/future owners.

I can't say it is better than the Jeep. I bought a Tacoma based on reliability, resale, and value. At this point, with the random issues, it has diminished value, and isn't reliable. Resale will remain strong. I really like the trucks looks and capability. I have no gripe with the way it rides or handles other than sluggish transmission. Hopefully this is a simple issue that gets resolved. ToyotaCare was a let down for lack of a rental. But, IF ITS NOT A CLEARLY DEFINED PROBLEM, that they can show me has been corrected, I will trade it. I will not pay a lot of money to be stranded. I will keep everyone posted as to what the outcome is and will request any codes and paperwork to pass along in hopes it may help someone in the future.

Now with all of this being said, what is this CPS failure I have seen mentioned? I'm going to use the search function but a simple clear answer would really help also.

It's normal if the OP did in fact press the brake and gas at the same time. I know he says he didn't but unless there is a camera under the dash to correlate where his feet were at the time of the incident how can anyone be sure?

Not trying to discredit what the OP is saying but with that accelerator / brake pedal limp mode function programmed into the vehicle there's always a chance it can be accidentally triggered by the driver or the ECM under unusual conditions.

Never been a fan of that "safety feature".

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Crank Position Sensor. When it pukes, truck is in limp mode. There is an updated part that should be what is installed.

Many issues reported on the head unit power down. IIRC there may be a fix for that too, even if it's a unit replacement. Harder to deal with I suppose as they typically want to see it happen, and intermittent isn't always easy to nail down.

Paint issue should be immediately called out and corrected in their body shop under warranty.

Them not providing you a loaner is 'legal' but lousy business on their part. I'd be looking for the GM and voicing displeasure. Maybe parlay the headunit swap w/o having to see it happen or something.........

While they have it in the shop and cold, insist on a manual transmission fluid level check, and the TSB reflash of the transmission controller. When the transmission is low on fluid, many have been provided a significantly extended warranty.

Sidenote. I'm interested in this 'light' that says foot on brake/accellerator at the same time. Didn't know that was a thing. Why does it exist (does the manual say?). Or have drivers become so incompetent that they just need another light to flash?

Edit, I see @jsinnard post above, 1 min before mine, that has the answer to my sidenote. So yes, trying to compensate for driver incompetence.

Question is, is there a way for the owner to bring it out of limp mode?

I know I didn't push the brake to accelerate or while accelerating. Sleepy at that time? Yeah. Dumb? No. Its a wait and see game. Maybe they get it fixed, maybe they don't.

If you're wearing snow boots or a large wide sole, all it would need to do is catch an edge of either pedal in a split second.

I'm seeing a lot of these boot around now.

limp mode due to CPS. Been an issue with tacomas for years now, not just 3rd gen. Luckily it's a simple fix but just a pain in the ass

Likely.... regardless of what the dealership finds this time I would purchase my own sensor and when the truck comes back, swap out myself.

Exactly. I'd rather do it myself than waste time at the dealership. It really is a simple fix and lots of people on here can help out

And people should also be aware that the truck will go into limp mode when both pedals are pushed, intended or not.

Random question about limp mode: Is there a way to get it out of this mode? Disconnect battery?

That should work however if the condition is a hard fault instead of intermittent, it will remain in limp mode. The other issue with disconnecting the battery is it might clear any internal codes thrown so you can't diagnose what caused it in the first place.

Make sure the dealership let's you know what specific codes were recorded so whatever they diagnose makes sense.

I haven't tested it yet on my 16 but some limp mode corrections say to put the vehicle in park, shut it off for a minimum of 30 seconds then turn it on again. If it was an intermittent code like a failing CPS or double pedal push it may clear limp mode while retaining the codes. If it's a hard fault (constant code) like a failed CPS it may not.

    ...^^^... OP, I didn't know it was a 2016 from your info, looked like a 2012 ...

Dealer should have given you a rental for sure and I would raise h*ll with dealer and Toyota Corp next week ... especially over Chrismas holiday.

On getting a "dud", I can't answer that as some have had problems with Gen. 3 models.

All I can say is my experience with my 2016 has been very good. Have had maybe 10-12 Toyota pickups and this 2016 seems to be one of the most trouble free so far @ 8,000 miles and 8 months old.

If you have a lemon, document it and make them take it back. If it's fixable, then make the dealer do a good job. From your post, sounds like the dealer could be more accommodating.

    Good luck OP
