So I bought a cheapo pro grill like two weeks after I got my truck. Ever since, my radar cruise has been completely unreliable. It'll work for maybe 20-30 miles then give me an error saying to clean the sensor. Sometimes theres a legit small bug on the garnish. Other times its raining. Is it the cheap grill or does this safety sense thing just not work? It seems pretty insane to me that it gets a bug splatter on it and the cruise is totally useless. Since I changed the grill so early on, I dont have much a reference to go on. Should I upgrade the grill to factory or bitch at the dealership to fix the sensor?

Did you purchase an OEM garnish to put on the ebay grill, or went aftermarket with that also? I've heard that non OEM garnish covers over the sensor can cause issues. Wait for some others to chime in but you might want to try swapping to OEM cover and see if anything changes.

Chances are its your grill. Even if it weren't, it's almost 100% certain that your dealership will blame the grill without even investigating. Try going back to factory for a while.

I say give it sometime. It took my sensor awhile to adjust.

I recently took it in for the 5k miles oil change and they brought it up before i did, saying there was a tsb on the cruise sensor. They've been cool to work with me on it so far. But theres no sense in them replacing the sensor if its the grill.

I'll have to check but I doubt it was OEM. I was hoping an OEM garnish would snap into this one and work. Hopefully thats it

That is very cool of them. The tsb is them waterproofing the sensor. Having a sensor go out a lot probably has a different cause than moisture. (Symptoms of needing the tsb are false alarms and/or it sometimes not working in the rain.)

I dunno, looking back I'd try the garnish first, then the grill, then if neither, bring it in to the dealer.

2019 ORDC just under 10K miles Toyota PRO grill & garnish no issues. I have an appointment 6-27 for the TSB & oil chg. I ask the dealer if they would still do it with the Pro grill & he said yes, he had to inspect it then repair or replace it. by repair I wonder if they will put that rubber tape cover over it ?

I bought a China-made grille and a OE Toyota cover. It was a complete bitch to get the cover to fit the grille, but the sensor hasn't given me any problems.

My 2019 truck had the TSB done before I took delivery of it.

The tsb is more than adding silicone. They reflash the software. My dealer would do it on my oem pro grill but said I had to sign a waiver and he would have to turn it off

You can still use manual cruise, IIRC you just hold the button to turn it on. Manual, meaning you set a speed and it will hold that speed until you hit the brake or pull the lever to cancel it.

Mine did the same thing. So I pulled apart the garnish. The printed plastic face piece is stuck on with double sided tape.
I got rid of the bulky backing plate and just put to plexi cover on, it fit snug into the opening and it works like a charm!

The OEM and the chinese copy uses a thick backing plate. (Don't know why?) Works much better then before.

This topic has of course, been covered immensely in other threads. However, as one who has also swapped out his OEM grill for a TRD aftermarket grill, I can definitely say that it is NOT the grill itself that is causing your problem. It could be the sensor cover, sensor itself, or that it needs recalibrating. In one of the other threads on this subject, someone posted that because of the slightly lower placement of the sensor on the TRD cover as opposed to the stock OEM grill placement of the sensor, what he did, was that he installed two lock washers in the top screw on the sensor itself, where you mount it to the grill. What this did, was in essence, slightly altered the angle of the sensor so that it mimics the placement of the original sensor, thereby functioning as it should. In my own case, after I swapped for the TRD style grill, what I am finding is that every once in a while for seemingly no reason, the "PCS OFF" light will light up on the gauges, even though if I look at the menu, it clearly shows that the PCS system is in fact, "on". The only way to get the annoying PCS OFF light to go back off, is by turning off the engine and then restarting it. Yes, plenty annoying, and seemingly, for no reason. I am personally hoping that this just eventually goes away, as the sensor "learns". I bought my 2019 TRD Sport in April of 2019, so all the recalibrations have supposedly already been done. I checked with the official Toyota site, and it says there are no "campaigns" with my vehicle. Also, it sounds like you have a really decent dealer too, as they seem to not make a big deal out of the switch in grills, like some other dealers have done. Keep the group posted on how this works out!

When the dealer sees that aftermarket grill they’re going to tell you to GFY... Jus sayin.
