I've got a 2015 V6 4x4 auto trans I just bought last September with 40,000 and I've been wondering, my 4th to 5th upshift seems more pronounced than the other upshifts. Not all the time but I guess at lower rpms around town getting it up to 50mph or so. Sometimes on the highway it'll give me a more firm shift as well. Nothing crazy but it is harder or a bit more firm sometimes, gives a little kick. I dont hear any clunking or any noise at all. I did a drain and fill on the trans last October at my local dealer. I mentioned it to them and they took it for a road test and said it was normal. My 1st Gen I had before this was sort of similar but the 2WD T100 I use for work is almost too soft of a shift.

Seems like when I've been driving the truck about 30 minutes or more it is less noticable. Am I worrying too much or is this abnormal? Ive never owned a vehicle with less miles on it. Perhaps I have some more breaking in to do.

Did the dealer experience the pronounced upshift during their road test?
Once in a great while I'll have some random weird shift that feels more pronounced in the higher gears, but it's pretty rare.
Maybe @gearcruncher has some thoughts on this

I've read many threads on this as my truck does it. It only does it when I drive the truck real real easy. Many others have reported the same issue. It only does it once in a while.

My commute is a constant 0-50 over and over. I leave the truck in 4 as I think they up shit way to fast. Truck drives much much better while is 4th if under 50ish.

My 16 and 20 Silverado did the same thing. It's like they need a bit more throttle to shift smoothly at higher speeds.

Lol it’s Funny how we guys are…well me at least. I love working on the tacoma and I am looking for any excuse to do something.

What’s that squeak? Think I better change my pulleys.
Suspension clunk? Better order new bushings.
car is running at 190 f…..time to change the coolant.

I Feel my 2011 downshift from 4 to 3 almost like I am letting out a clutch and it’s a automatic. Lol. Not worried as said above you will be fine. :)

Thanks guys, and like pahaf said. I'm literally like a hound dog listening and feeling for every little thing. My wife tells me I'm going crazy lol. Idk I'm just real proud of the truck and want it to last as long as my dad's Tacomas did with 400k. I'll do another drain and fill here soon myself and make sure it's all gtg.

Mine will do the same thing going down a hill if I push the break hard enough. My little 2005 Scion xA will so the same.

Make sure after your drain and fill, that you properly Check the level by bringing it up to temp. There is a proper way to do that

I bought my truck with 24k miles on it.
Soon after I bought it, I noticed mine did it too.
I took it to Toyota, they said it was normal.

I now have 152k on it, and it still does it. Even more pronounced when it’s cold.
    I’m of the opinion, It’s Normal:thumbsup:

yah there are a couple things going on inside the valve body to create shifting concerns for the guy in the drivers seat .5th gear is demanding on the hydraulics as well as the planetaries inside the transmission .
During the winter , I lift my foot off the gas pedal and allow the trans to shift to 5th . Doing this helps the hydraulic circuit in the valve body . That first initial shift into 5th gear first thing in the morning when the truck is cold is what most guys complain about . After that , its good for the day .
Driving in 4th until the trans warms up does help .
Highly suggest grabbing a scan gauge or ultra gauge , then watch your upshifts on the display along with transmission temps .

You can read about the 5th gear issue here

This exactly describes how my '07 shifts when cold. Pretty sure it's been this way since I bought it new in 2007. Now have 130k miles still does the same thing.

I once underfilled the transmission on a drain and fill by about 0.75 quarts and it shifted even harder, until I went through the proper warm-up and added fluid check procedures and realized I had underfilled.
