Not that you'd want to give up towing or anything, but I can see aftermarket rear bumpers having the hitch behind the tag and cutting this thing off.

It sure does impede the departure angle.

Especially once your spare tire outgrows that space and its not there anymore.

Imagine not having the hitch, tire and goofy tail pipe.

I think this will be the thing once the aftermarket catches up.

I scrape my hitch sometimes over rocks. Some touch up and little paint. If you are really, really wheelin' you will be in something different.

bumper hitches have a much smaller weight capacity than those attached to frame. Not really used on newer vehicles.

i think he's talking about aftermarket bumpers that mount the hitch behind the plate?

that said I don't really see how it affect departure angle, when the surrounding bumper frame will still be there.

wait this is a 4th gen thread so I could be wrong, idk how those are designed or how aftermarket will be.

AWE exhaust has addressed this with a removable tail section and little tiny tips. (For 3rd Gen.) I think 4G exhaust exits on the driver's side. I can see your point though. The hitch could be the last piece of the smoother departure puzzle.

Yes - I was thinking of an aftermarket steel bumper that has the hitch behind the license plate.

The oem hitch is welded to a frame crossmember that dips down to the bottom of the oem bumper and then the hitch hangs down below that another 4-5"

The spare hangs down real far too- more than the previous gens.

I saw where someone got a 285 to fit under there and it really hangs low then.

Once people really start wheeling these trucks, they will be cutting this off.

    I agree.

It's called a high clearance rear bumper on previous gens

But not many will be in a rush to hack up their $50k plus truck right away, making demand low. And supply slow to provide.

That Mickey Mouse spare tire is the only thing keeping the truck from being completely hung on that hitch and the exhaust pipe is begging to be squished.

Nobody is really wheeling these trucks yet though, myself included.

I'm going to try to at least wait until parts are available for when I damage the truck, as I imagine most folks w these trucks are.

    Yes!

I am speculating that the hitch will be cut off for the aftermarket high clearance rear bumper.

I bet some body will offer a bumper soon so that people can wheel their $50k trucks and not damage them.

Maybe this thread would make more sense in the 2nd gen forum

    Yeah it does!

The hitch isn't a bolt on thing anymore, its basically welded onto the frame.

Losing it would greatly improve the departure angle and by relocating it behind the tag you would get to keep that capability.

And having a steel bumper that you could actually drag on things and not get damaged has been a thing for Tacomas for a while.

It’s literally part of the frame on the 4th gen. I’m not sure how the aftermarket will find away around that. My RCI high clearance bumper is one of the best mods iv’e done. Departure angle is insane.

Pretty much all of the aftermarket plate bumpers of previous gens have this option. I imagine someone will come out with one that allows that to happen and at that point the bumper would become the rear frame crossmember I assume. Not what I would want from a liability standpoint. That is crazy that it is welded into the frame now. If it is indeed part of the frame structure I would not want to go cutting on it. I cannot believe they did that. Manufacturers really do not want people modifying anything anymore it seems.
