I don't understand why ~17mpg isn't cutting it, if money(i.e. the cost of gas) obviously isn't the issue?

I would stick with something similar to your dads current 2wd daily driver. Or get a 2nd gen 2wd 4cyl 5 spd like i have! I'm seeing 25 mpg!

I vote camry, but if it's mpgs you're after, my parents have a 2005 corolla, 4 cylinder, 5speed, that gets 41 mpgs highway.

The Camry would be good choice, my daughter in law has a 97 v6 and gets 22-28 MPG, my son has an 07 TC and gets around 30 MPG with zero problems, replaced brakes and tires only in 110,000 miles.

    neglect, mostly.
if you're not trying to sell your taco and want good mileage i would just buy like an early 90's honda accord. find one with 200k+ miles for like 800 dollars and drive the hell out of it. crazy great gas mileage and you can fix everything on it with a wrench and a pair of pliers.

    skip the rice corolla and buy a early 1990's chevy s-10 4cyl 5speed 2wd.

I know its not a toyota but they're bulletproof and can be had for $1500 easy.

lol I know but its just going to get worn out commuting right? Might as well beat on a truck you don't care about.

I did just realize they mostly dont have cruise control though, but my '91 Sonoma got 28 mpg easy.

you'll never make up the cost of the car + insurance + taxes with improved gas mileage. even if you get a car for $500 once you figure in yearly tax and insurance you'd be better off just spending more on gas. this is if saving on gas is why you are you want to get a commuter which it seems to be

The tC was a fun little car man, had one for almost 4 years. Had windowns tinted, exhaust, cold air intake, 17in chrome tsw nogaro's on proxe fz4's. It was fast, reliable, and I got 27 mpg's. . . . O yeah and girls really do love the car. Didn't regret buying it.
