It's because cancer is a general term that encompasses hundreds of completely different diseases......Finding a cure for "cancer" is like finding a cure for "sickness"......it just doesnt make sense. Each cancer is completely different genetically and pathophysiologically. Realistically the only thing they have in common is some "thing" causes the genetic material within the cell to mutate (UV light, carcinogens, DNA replication errors, etc.). Stomach cancer can be due to inherent conditions (congenital vitamin B12 deficiency causing achlorhydria) or acquired such as long standing H.pylori infections just to name a couple causes.

To answer your second question the rate of cancer is increasing for several reasons. More people in the US have healthcare now than ever before (despite what we are all led to believe on the news.....how many people saw doctors in the 1800s). The population is aging and the majority of cancers are due to a "second hit".....meaning a random mutation the body doesnt catch and stop. The older you are, the more cellular replications there are, the less efficient they are, the more likely for a mistake to occur and the less likely to catch it. Also you've had longer exposure to carcinogens.....exposure generally has a long lag time

Nontheless, OP stand by him during treatment and keep as positive of an attitude as possible
