All of Tacoma trucks come with linear rate springs.

Another thing that you will notice is that the Hitachi's found on the TRD Sport have the biggest diameter than the OR Billies and the Normal shocks.

There's so many guys yarding OR stuff off that's it's dirt cheap and a pretty good upgrade. If you don't want the glorified off-road cruise control than all you need is a locker, hell add two for good measure. Otherwise nice going. Looks great.

But you can see in your example picture that they are progressive! Just look at the coil spacing. Look at the top of the OR, see how close the brown plastic covered wind is to its neighbors, especially the coil wind above. Now look at the other Hitachis- the spacing is even all the way up and down.

    Again, look at this illustration:

I don't understand how it could be any more plain as day just looking at 'em....

Yep that's exactly how the springs looked off the OR, I posted a picture above. Curiously, the springs from my SR5 looked pretty identical, at least physically. I'm sure the spring rates are slightly different.

Yeah, I mean they're not as blatantly progressive as ones for performance cars where you see it go from a very loose to a very tight winding, but most progressive windings really only change in that last little bit of their coil. Here's a good example from a Nissan 350Z:
You can see the left side pair pretty obviously, but the right side pair barely looks like a rate change before you'd be hitting the bump stops. Similar story with the OR coils, and I think that brown sleeve is to denote where it starts or aid factory identification or something.

Re: Spring rate I know for a fact that the OR is a higher rate, as swapping a set from a V6 4x4 OR onto my I4 4x2 SR raised my nose by a little over an inch! To be fair this could partially be because my SR Hitachis were wound with a lower rate than what they put on SR5's with a V6.

That is correct, my front end raised at least half an inch but maybe closer to an inch.

Great thread folks! I've learned a lot. My 2002 TRD off-road got killed and I replaced it with a 2017 4wd SR5 double cab. The mods discussed are very interesting.

That's awesome! Definitely gets the seal of approval.

I kind of wished I did this, but in addition to the OR goodies, I wanted the bigger nav screen that TRDs come with.

Were the OR wheels noticeably heavier than the SR5 wheels? Feel any power loss with the larger tires since you have the 2.7?

Not much of a difference when putting them back on the truck.

From what I've seen and read online, the stock SR5 wheel and tire combo is around 55 lbs and the OR wheel and tire combo is 58 lbs. I can try to confirm in a few weeks.
