While the wife wouldn’t like it if I bought one, I was thinking the same thing. I get anxiety when it rains hard in a tent. A hard top trailer would allow me to roll over and go back to sleep knowing I wouldn’t be wet or wondering if I set up a tent where water doesn’t pool.

I have not been camping since...I can't even remember the last time. I'll be going camping this weekend with my son-in-laws & the another fellow in-law Dad (we'll be the old men on the trip).

My body could take all the discomforts of sleeping on the ground or cot in my youth. Nowadays, I wanna be spoiled which means, I'll be buying a proper camper (3800lbs or less) with built in kitchen/bathroom/shower.

Sounds like you can "rough it" when you need to and that's a great part of the experience.

Yes, people suck sometimes so I understand wanting serenity with nature.

Let us know how things turn out moving forward. Maybe you should try renting a proper camper with all the amenities?

That's why i was looking at home. My dog won't sleep in a tent. She'll stay awake all night for security. Plus, the tear drops have AC, so you can leave your dog in them comfortably while you run out for errands.

Any pics with the awning out?

I agree 15k is a lot for that. Seems like you can get a decent on new for 10k.

I never used the awning. The AC only works on shore power and I was boondocking and always will be. No campgrounds or RV parks are in my future unless it's unavoidable for some reason.

I hear you. I can't justify that either, but someone is buying them :) Figured I'd toss them out there on the chance that it'd work for you.

I doubt I'll ever own a "proper camper" as they will be larger than I ever want (unless someday down the road when I'm retired). I also don't want/need AC. Just a fan would be great. I think I'm most interested in the Chalet or Aliner type trailers. Aliner has a 15' one that would fit in my garage I think. The tent-type popup trailers seem a real hassle to set up. I can set up my canvas tent in about 10 mins and I bet it's more waterproof as well without all those velcro seams to close up.

So after a bunch of Google searching and youtube I think the A-frame type best meets my needs/interests. In particular, the Aliner Ranger 12 is just about right.

One question. I found the ball hitch to be a bit concerning when off road and articulation over hills, holes, bumps, etc. How hard is it to remove the ball hitch and install something like a lock-n-roll hitch? I'm assuming you'd need to cut something and weld on a new piece for it.

Good choice on camper, and correct. Find yourself a good welder to swap out the A-frame (referring to the trailer side hitch plate, not folding camper:D).

The ball hasn't been an issue with me. I've dragged bumper before risking uncoupling. But I gotta admit, it's a cool hitch.

@phdog I'm not sure if this fits your use case, but I have put my Max Coupler through its paces and couldn't be happier. You may want to check out this site to see if one of their setups fits your use case.

It might. Mainly I was thinking of replacing the standard ball coupler on the trailer with something more articulating, but since the trailers I've looked at have a coupler basically as one piece and not removable I wasn't sure how best to swap.

I looked at these and even visited the Denver factory. In the end, they are just too small for me. I don't want a big trailer by any means, but I want to be able to stand up and move around a bit so some sort of popup is probably the answer.

those things are badass. How long are they backordered? Anything on the showroom floor a buyer could take home same day?

My dad wants to get a trailer on his 2015 4Runner. Something bigger than that, but not by much. Still, if that's tanking your milage so much, I'm curious to see what it would do to guys Runner

Try to track down a beat up, used Taxa Cricket: https://taxaoutdoors.com/habitats/cricket/

They pop up used every once in a while for decent prices but also hold their value better than most garbage that rolls out of the post-recession, monopolized Indiana RV universe.

Higher quality than an A-Liner by miles and might actually hold up to off roading a bit, whereas the A-Liner is only aesthetically "off-road" worthy. Thing will probably leak like a sieve after a few twists of the frame.

Something like a 4Wheel Camper would work well for you it would seem.

With camp in the bed (or on the flatbed if you want more space) you don’t have much of a different size parking/driving platform.
