The wife and I never pay for camping. Free BLM and national Forrest land, etc. only.

Why pay to be crowded by loud drunk inconsiderate people and their boom box when you can camp for free down the road either alone or a long ways away from people who also are respectful and like being dispersed :)

Might be a less appealing option since it is a little smaller overall but it sits right on the truck, super light and you can kit out the bed to meet your needs. Puppers can sleep in the bed, you can stay up top. Move the panels and stand up. And since you just mount it up on the taco, you can camp anywhere you can drive the truck. I love mine.

Love our 2015 T@G - just finished the Lithium conversion. Taking out 2 24f lead-acid batteries for a 26 pound lithium that lasts longer.

Yes, I have about 10 different trailers ready to take home.

Lead time on custom builds is 3 months.

This is my current answer to budget camping in wilderness...

    IMG_20200808_181106516.jpg

The trailer is a Summit 6' x 10' utility trailer that I flipped the axle on and added bigger Wrangler tires to...

    8jTo3wPoRICCjLWaiGfqHA.jpg

The tent is a Napier truck bed tent for a long bed full-sized pickup. It fits in the trailer, sort of...

    2k4gtWyrQ6OEgg52iAezdw.jpg

In the tent, I use a queen-size self-inflating air mattress that I plug into my inverter in the back of the 4Runner to inflate. I use a folding table to cook on and hold the 5-gallon water jug. I built a solar shower based off of YT videos I watched and it works OK. Water doesn't heat fast or last long.

    TCVRM1e_Rs-CVpJfC3P8TQ.jpg

I know it's not the solution you are looking for, but it works for me, sort of...

    Pros:

    - Cheap (under $200 for the tent and just use regular bedding for the air mattress, which was under $50. Trailer was $1800, but I use it for 100 other things besides camping.)

    - Always have a flat surface to sleep on.

    - You are off the ground and away from critters.

    - The metal walls add some sense of protection from predators.

    - I don't have to haul my fat ass up a flimsy ladder at 2 am to take a leak.

    - Super comfy sleep.

    - Can haul my UTV or ATV into the woods.

    Cons:

    - Can't stand up.

    - Not a hard-sided living area.

    - No bathroom, sink, table, kitchen, etc.

    - Takes as much time as a pop-up camper to set up. Likely more time.

    - No HVAC system; heat or AC.

    - Basically just a tent on a platform with some side walls.

I searched desperately last year for a small camper that my 4Runner could tow, that had extra ground clearance, had a queen-sized bed, had a bathroom that I fit in, wasn't total garbage, and was under $20k.

I could not find it. I have not camped once this summer. Mainly because I no longer have a girlfriend, or a dog, and camping in the deep woods, alone, with wolves, is unsettling. I am a sissy, lol.

I am also barely over 50 and now require comfort for sleeping. If I fall asleep on the couch, it feels like I was in a car wreck the next day. I have found that my cot, a twin-sized air mattress, and a large sleeping bag are actually quite comfy.

I'm waiting for my 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road to arrive and will then re-evaluate my camping options. Some sort of minimalist pickup bed camper is appealing, as is a smaller RV camper.

My dad currently has a Coleman pop-up camper that I will end up with soon and he is in a desperate search for a used Casita camper. The man can pay cash for a new one, but refuses to buy new, so he is looking for one within 500 miles. They are very cool, but very hard to find...

Might be perfect for you as well.

Still liking it. We spent two weeks with it in Nova Scotia in July and am presently in Ohio at our youngest daughters place. Brought the Tab for a spare bedroom. Have the AC running and having a spare bathroom is nice. It tows nicely behind my 2.7L 5 speed manual.

Not sure where you are located but there is a 2018 320s tag for sale in Bishop. Been in there for a while, might be a deal.

Like your setup.....with the money you saved, you can customize what you bring along for tthe specific trip. I use 4x6 atv trailer as my base. It doubles as my kayak carrier, or I switch it or to carry my RTT. Still leaves room below to haul what I need, and goes whereever I point it. Teardrops are great....sometimes wish I had one, but then I consider all the limitations. Way to be versatile!!!

    I actually

went camping last weekend for the first time in a couple of years. Temps during the day were in the 70's and likely to be near freezing at night, so I opted to try sleeping in the back of the 4Runner rather than a tent.

The whole point of the weekend was to use the bike to scout for elk in the area and shoot some video of me riding the new KLR in the woods. My base camp ended up being in a clay pit just off the main gravel road. Camp set up took an hour and it worked great.

    20221001_152420.jpg

But, the new twin-sized air mattress I bought was just too thick for the back of the 4Runner. I didn't sleep well and after a day of off-road riding, chopping wood, building a campsite, and muscling a big, heavy adventure bike in the woods, I was sore, in pain, and desperate need of my memory foam mattress back home.

It looked comfy, but I woke up with pain all over...

This is why I say small trailers rule. An A-class or 5th-wheel just can't get these views from Bob's roadside RV corral. :cookiemonster::cookiemonster::cookiemonster:

I have spent a lot of time using camping trailers including teardrops, pop ups and full size trailers. There is definitely a tradeoff. Sometimes I prefer just tent camping. But for extended trips it's really nice to have a good place to cook and shower. For me it's not so much about the bed as it is the kitchen and hot water
