but I had to get something. My kid got his license and the 20 year old civic that I'd been using to run around in is now a school commuter. Plus there is the tax write off, depreciation is an amazing thing.

I like cars better than trucks. A new civic or corolla would have suited me just fine. A Truck is more reassuring for customers though. Contractors are supposed to drive trucks, wear boots and Carharts. Driving up to bid a job in an old Civic is a little hokey.

I have a new Dodge 3500 dually, with the highest torque diesel they sell, and as my username might suggest it has that super heavy duty (and very well designed) Aisin tranny. I can pull a pallet of concrete, my bobcat, and a bunk of wood, up the hill 3K feet without breaking a sweat. Hell I could put the Tacoma in back. But parking is a chore, unless there are lots of spaces I have to back in. Dually tires make the Ram about 2' wider than most things on the road, and the turning radius is about 10 miles.

So I figure get some little pick em up. Maybe a Toy or one of those new Rangers or something. A truck I could even carry some tools or a few bags of concrete or some lumber for those times (like every day) when there's a need for some more of something to finish the job. I could commute in the dogone thing part of the time.

They all cost about the same, so I thought about an American truck so as not to offend. Chevy, Ford, GMC, or Edsel or something. The Fords are new, they might need the kinks worked out of them a while. Toyota doesn't make a small pickup in diesel the way they do in the third world where they weld a 50 caliber to the bed in the back. I asked the redneck service mechanic at the Dodge place, he after all is a motor head. He didn't even discuss, just flat out said Toyota.

So I went to buy one. Figured out a low price for an "access cab" without a back seat, four banger and 4x4. White, I think it had a radio. Cheaper than dirt. But I run things by my better half before doing anything. My prior approval didn't hold. Accusations of irresponsible middle age, so I told her go talk to the salesman, dealer is all of 14 minutes away. I knew she couldn't beat the price, I'd done my homework.

Came back all excited, liked the looks of the thing, kinda powerful in a small package just like her. (she's an under five foot under a hundred pound firecracker) Things had escalated to 4 doors and a V6. All the Ss and SRs were gone, had to get an SR5 though for the life of me I can't see the differences with all the models, all have same horse power, same tranny, same wheel base. So I got it.

Drove it home, nice little truck. Half ton. Good build. Knobs and buttons all solid and intuitive. People complain about the transmision, wife and kids like standards but I'm happy enough with an auto. Stays in high gear most of the time and saves gas, when I tromp on the pedal it goes. Handles a lot better than the Ram, nowhere near as good as my wife's Outback but that's to be expected. Pretty quiet. Parks like a car.

If I had a complaint it's that I'd never put chains on the front. Very little room between tire and front end type stuff, but that's ok, I'll get them for the back and they should work ok, I've always got a shovel. Can't fit an elk in the bed. Quartered I guess but I won't be winching any gutted carcasses into the Taco.

While I've been writing my wife took the kids to the store in it. She came back impressed. Good thing neither of us drove it before buying, sales guy could have extorted another thousand out of us. he he. Need a headache rack so I don't bust out the back window, steps for my little darlin can get in, real floor mats so I've a place spit my chaw. (just foolin with the last part). I'll post pictures when I tow the bobcat with it.

Well that was a ride, welcome. You'll find since Aisin is owned by Toyota lots of things on your new truck are made by them.

I love it, so does my wife and kids. Amazingly well made. It feels like better quality than the Ram. To tell the truth I like it better than my wife's Outback too though she got the gold plated heated toilet seat variation. Everything just seems so well made even if not luxurious. It will fit on small two tracks a lot better. I think with the rear chains it will go in fairly deep snow, sometimes we get a foot or more here between when I park and when I try to drive out of the woods. Don't know if it has a gauge for the oil cooler or transmission cooler. Have to figure out the thing.
