There's still not much going on when that happens.

    Yeah, how about that.

The service manage said it was a rarity - small comfort. I had a '91 Toyota pickup, before they were called Tacoma (Brand new under $10k.) My '01 had the rusted frame issue. My '12 SR5 had a clutch go out at 60k (I've been driving a MT since the 70's). They replaced the clutch for free. The '12 also had to be treated at the dealer for this round of frame rust issue (can't they get that right?) and now this engine issue.

I did explore my options, and swallowed hard before ordering my '22 SR, but from where I'm sitting, QC is deteriorating with the competition as well.

Yes, even with a supercharger the truck is not very impressive. It's not the worst but it's not really good either. Only a small bitch though, the truck is still the best truck for what I need by far.

    Hm, interesting.

I l mean compared to an Audi R8, yes it’s not impressive. With my spirited driving I’ve never felt like this truck is underpowered or not impressive, even on stock tune. With the premium SFOB my truck is a beast, not sure how else to call it. I honestly look for every excuse to go drive it. 7250 redline is kickass.

Also, from what I’ve read on here, the Magnuson tune needs a lot of improvement. Apparently there is more low end torque with the SFOB then with the SC. Maybe that’s why you are not really “impressed”? Did you try premium SFOB? I’m running 93 octane and it’s freaking awesome, I surprised quite a few people on the roads haha.

Every on ramp is a chance to clean ‘er out!

Riding Superbikes in my younger days, I used to get off on rural off ramps, somewhat safely roll the stop sign, unleash that effer and beat the cars I was following when I came up the ramp. No carbon or glazed cylinder walls in those bikes haha!

I'd love to hear your reviews of any 1979 thru 2004 Toyota pickups / Tacoma's :)

Unremarkable performance as well but also 2000lbs lighter than the current massive “midsize” trucks which helps.

the 0-60 of a 3vz is about twice as long as the current tacoma, and the 22re is 3 times as long as the current tacoma. :)

My yellow 79 4x4 was a beast. Took it to northern quebec bush on a week long fishing trip when it had less than 1k on the odo, canoe, and gear loaded. Took us 23 hrs of straight through driving to get to our destination. I cross boulder strewn rivers where once there were logging bridges over them tearing up the exhaust system. Afer having a great week catching 5-6 brook trout, 20 lb northern pike and 10 lb walleyes, it was time to make the trip back home, but not without some repairs before hitting the border. Our 79 toyota pickup 4wd was the only one i saw during the entire trip.

I wished my red 78 toyota wolverine pickup was that tuff. The california shop that did the conversion did a chitty job.

You do realize these aren’t race vehicles right?

I have owned them since the 80s, the 22R days. Find this current engine impressive, more power than I’ll ever need. Though I rarely go over 65, and not the type that likes to race stop light to stop light. It does seem like most everyone is in a hurry these days…

If you want a powerhouse why did you buy a Tacoma?

Yeah those conversions weren’t the best. Factory trucks were hard to kill. When I was a teen we were on a camping trip out in the boonies, one of the guys dad had a Toyota pickup which was rare sighting in PA during the 80s, Toyota’s weren’t as popular back then as they are now, thing was almost impossible to get stuck, it is the truck that peaked my interest in Toyotas. Hell, when I bought my ‘85 4Runner, used to get teased for owning “Jap Crap”

The Tacoma is the best midsize truck for me by far. Just because it could use a better power train doesn’t mean it doesn’t get the job done perfectly fine. No where else could I buy an access/extended cab with a manual, decent build quality and reliability in the size of a Tacoma.

    Gotcha.

Do believe because Toyota under powers their trucks is why they last so long. It isn’t trying to rip itself apart. This is the fastest most powerful Toyota I owned, find it funny people bitch about it being low on power. I mean how much more do you need? There are laws that dictate how fast we can go. Does perfectly fine if you abide by the traffic laws. When I want to go fast I save it for the dirt bike, that is way more thrilling than the truck could ever be.

It would of been nice if we got the diesel, but want that more for the mileage than anything and they aren’t terribly fast either. Once they go hybrid or full electric sure the diesel desires will fade.

Seems for many they want the tacoma to be all things, even a high performance sports car. Well, law of physics say it ain't gonna happen.

0-60 on some recent automobiles I’ve owned:

    1995 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.8L: 8.3s
    1990 Ford Ranger 2.3L: 11.0s
    2001 Subaru Forester 2.5L: 8.5s
    2020 Toyota Tacoma 3.5L: 7.0s

The Taco is the fastest I’ve ever owned. I remember the first time I stomped on the gas to pass on a 2-lane road and was very surprised and pleased.
