We admitted we were powerless over 4wd - that our lives had become unmanageable?

I never thought I would need a 4x4 till I put a boat in and the landing was covered in slimey moss and I kept sliding down. I had my 04 Tacoma TRD and if it wasn't for the 4 wheel drive not sure I could have gotten out because I was sliding in with brakes applied.

Maybe I can help your understanding. I don't need a 4x4. Hell I don't even need a truck. If I had unlimited money, I'd probably be driving a Raptor because 1-You damn right it looks cool, 2-I like driving a larger vehicle because I prefer sitting up in traffic and 3-I prefer the view from inside a truck over a SUV. Unfortunately I don't have unlimited money so I drive a 2wd, lifted/leveled (3") Tacoma with 285s because it still drives/feels like a truck, still sits up higher in traffic, fits in my garage and most importantly it looks freaking cool! I also don't need the expensive Morimoto headlights and fogs, SES rims, way too expensive leather seats with matching console cover, shift/e-brake boots and soon to come steering wheel and various other mods I did mostly for, you guessed it, looks. I didn't do any of that for anyone else. Don't give a shit if anyone thinks my truck looks good. I love it and with Covid hitting right after I bought my '20, unless you see it in my work parking lot as I rarely go anything these days, it's in my garage which is just fine because the only person I care about enjoying the way it looks is me. One other thing: I drove Ford and Dodge trucks up until moving into the automotive/tire industry 10 years ago. That's the other reason I drive a Tacoma. Reliability is very helpful when you don't have unlimited money and the few extra bucks 4wds cost up front, maintenance and gas just doesn't give me any bang for the buck. Much rather throw that at something that looks cool. Hope that helps!

4x4 option on Tacoma cost $3-4K more. It does NOT required unlimited money to get.
I am not a millionaire about I have a 4x4 Tacoma. Use 4H all the time in winter.

Mn or any place that gets snow it should be a requirement.

I have to disagree with the buy once cry once in this to 4x or not scenario. I had 4x previously when I moved to fl and not once used it in 10 yrs. So I had a be true moment at the dealer and I have a 4x2 now.

be true to yourself and you won’t go wrong. Kinda like anyone riding around with a rooftop tent but only opens in the driveway for that killer photo op- not true to yourself. Buy once cry once is intended for buying cheap vs buying quality not 4x or 2x

It is similar analogy, a person buys the bare minimum thinking that is all he needs and then regret it when situation arise that a more expense option actual works better.
Sure "Buy once, Cry once" applies more to cheap vs quality.
I brought some Harbor Freight cheap tool for once use and never regret it, or cry about it.
It all depends on what you really need.
4x4 isn't just for snow, if you ever go off-roading in desert or launch a boat, you better off have 4x4.

4WD makes it easier to climb over those piles of zombie bodies. And the squishy-crunchy sound is quite satisfying.

I've had 4x4 and 4x2. I now own a 4x2 obviously by choice. I have a good set of tires, a few pounds of weight in the bed over the axle and I know how to drive. I'll never get stuck in snow, but I know I'm not going off roading either. If you're not a moron and able to think, and not going off road, 4x2 is just fine.

Yes, if 4x4 was the only added option on the truck. Around here, all 4x4s seem to be at least $8K over a 4x2 SR.

Own a 2wd and live in hilly snow country and do a lot of hunting and fishing. In winter I change over to winter tires, keep fuel tank full and slide in 200 lb bed mat for extra traction, no issue getting around. When hunting and fishing, not interested in taking my truck in over washed out and grown in forestry access roads to scratch or beat up truck so when the going gets tough I unload my ATV and carry on from there. Much easier to get around. Never had the need, interest or extra cost associated with 4X4 ownership. No 4X2s available in Canada anymore and 4X4 pricing start in the mid 40Ks so sadly I guess this will be my last Taco.

Thank fuck for my 4x4 in the last storm we had, at 1' 1/2 feet of snow on the side streets. Cars were not going anywhere.

    I’ll share a lil story
I was driving up a snowy trail, up a mountain, road was in good condition with hardpack snow, truck was doing fine. I pull over to chill for a minute. Chevy silverado drives past me going up the incline and his tires start spinning, he had aggressive tires too, tires keep spinning, he revs it…. more spinning, he puts it in reverse and goes down the mountain. After he left, I continued on my way, very chill drive
    4wd vs 2wd

edit: here is the road in summer

Similar story from my childhood. I was with my much older brother on heavily snow covered roads in NY Catskill mountains. We were in his 4x2 International Harvester Travelall, snow tires on rear. 4x4s were backing down the mountain after giving up. We motored all the way up.

Better to have it and not need it, or something like that...

That said, so many "overloading" folk are just camping. Largely in a campground. Some actually getting out on forest roads or in BLM. But the truth is that most of the places they go... hell, most of the places I go... you could get there with 8" of ground clearance and some decent driving skills. 4x4 isn't a necessity 90% of the time. At least in the more dry months of the year.

Not to say there isn't 4x4 spots. But soooo many folks buying 4x4 trucks don't really use them in ways that require the capability.
