Sorry to resurrect such an old thread. So what was the outcome? I am in the same boat currently with a 2021 Tacoma, the front diff barely tapped the oil pan, and now I have a hole. Already bought the replacement upper oilpan, but no guides anywhere on how involved the replacement is. Do I need to remove the tranny?

Not likely. IIR you’ll have to drop the front diff to replace that.

Since this thread is back from the graveyard...how hard were you guys sending it to cause the front dif to hit the upper oil pan? I read one guy was airborne, is that the threshold to avoid? lol

On my 2021, hit a bolder in the middle of a freeway lane, I could not get out of the way without causing a bigger accident. Pierced through the OEM black steel skid plate, and hit the driver side diff mount. The force moved the diff enough to leave a diff bolt imprinted in the aluminum upper oil pan, which caused oil to leak. Now potentially looking at 19 hours (thats what the dealer called for to swap this out) of a job to swap the upper oil pan.

That sounds like it should be a job for the Insurance Company to handle.
    Did you ask?
    You should have.

Fyi, for those interested how long it took to replace. a shop mechanic spent 19.3 hours replacing the aluminum upper oil pan. Was told that the tranny had to be moved out of the way a tiny bit.

Off topic, but I had a room mate in college who took my stock Ranger wheels (With the baby 31" Swampers on them), put them on his jeep thingand ran it untill he ground his brake calipers off. Used JB weld to put it all back together and drove from Reno to Texas on that mess.

I'm a welder... I use a different kind of glue. I've never had the stuff work for me anyway, so there's that-more in line with your thinking.

@JoshS You don't have to send it to Crack the upper oil pan.

@tgeek8 I ended up hitting a boulder heading Westbound on Highway 6 near the bottom of Price Canyon in Utah New Years evening. A 7hr drive from Farmington, NM to SLC took 10.5hrs that day. A huge snow storm that came through that weekend.

Insurance totaled my 2012 out due a new frame being 4 months out. Bent the frame where the LCA mounts. I thought the lower oil pan needed to be replaced, but after going through this thread it looks like the upper needs to be replaced too.

My coworkers didn't believe me and thought I did it while offroading. I pulled up the dashcam footage and that spoke for itself.
