Don't use the stock brackets that hold the stock stereo into place.. I did the same thing and had all sorts of issues. I didn't use the Metra kit but the Scoche kit fits great.

After much hassle I just drilled new holes in the dad gum stock brackets... We finally got it in there, and it's recessed far enough, I just need to do a little bit more adjustments to get it seated in there just right.

I also need to take some advice from some of the other members as far as keeping the silver and black part of the dash kit together. I'm gonna go out and mess with it a little bit more, i'll post pictures when I'm done to show you guys the progress...

Again, thanks everyone for your help!

Ditch the Metra and get a scosche kit. They are much better built. I ordered the metra first, saw it in the packaging and sent it back. Scosche kit fit perfect and was $4 more.

Ya, the only problem is that the metra was thrown in with my order from crutchfield... Granted I could order a Scosche for like $25 off Amazon though...

I mean you are just going above and beyond any expectations I ever had.

I contemplated piecing my order together through Amazon to save a little bit of money, but I chose crutchfield because of the reputation and tech support. Never thought I would be taken care of like this...

I ordered my last headunit from crutchfield, and I'm sure I will order my next as well... Thanks for being so relentless in making sure I get taken care of...

So Darren took care of me and sent me out a free Scosche dash kit and boy was I amazed!!!! Here is the Metra dash kit (which I would not wish upon anyone in my wildest dreams)...

    photo1-2_071312d6c84d0ae0247b45572e6d6c9a17a05982.jpg

    And Here's the Schosche...

    photo2-2_c86e920a84a8f28a614468ad474598289eafd993.jpg

I mean I'm sure the pictures speak for theirselves, but I was absolutely amazed at the difference a dash kit could make... I fought with the Metra for DAYS!!!! I was filing down the factory brackets, cutting holes in the factory bracket and it was an absolute nightmare!!!!!!

Anyways, long story short... I put this new dash kit it and it looks gorgeous. It has a nice lip all the way around, and it looks recessed into the dash just like I was looking for...

Thanks to Darren and the entire Crutchfield team for taking care of me and making me a customer for life!

Just read the whole thread because I am doing my research for this exact setup! glad your roller coaster ride is over!

I am curious what your thoughts are on the kenwood unit itself? are you happy with it? would you recommend it?

    Thanks!

Thanks for reading my thread Adam and Welcome to Tacomaworld... I have only been here for a few months but have been more that satisfied with all the help I've received so far.

As far as the unit, I'm very happy with it so far. For the $499 price tag you get a 7" screen, bluetooth, integrated pandora, backup camera ability, youtube streaming, etc etc etc.. Before this unit I had a Kenwood DDX7100 with NAV in my previous vehicle, and I didn't have a lick of problems in the 5 years I had it and that's why I went with Kenwood again.

I do miss the NAV sometimes, but there are apps you can download to your phone and stream to your indash if you just absolutely need it. Hope this helps... Feel free to post back with any more questions you might have. Or always feel free to start your own thread with any questions. I don't know much about this stuff man, that's why I had to get advice... But you came to the right site to get some help...

    Best of luck man...

Monkey, what year taco do you own? wonder if that has anything to do with the way it fits in the dash.

Ya man, I was blown away at how well they took care of me. Odd enough, as soon as he sent me that kit I never heard from him again. I sent him emails and called asking if he needed the metra kit back, or a supervisor's e-mail so I could give him props but never heard back... He roamed this site for a few weeks and really helped a lot of people out and now I haven't seen him in awhile.

If you want me metra kit you're more than welcome to it. If you just pay the cost of getting it shipped its yours. I'm sure I could throw it in one of those flat rate boxes or something...

@ TuFerLife, Thanks for starting this thread. Sorry to hear you had a tough time with your Kenwood DDX719. I just bought the DDX719 for my Tacoma X-Runner and I love it! Luckily for me the metra kit was installed by my buddy Tony at Soundcraft Car Stereo without a problem. Looks and fits good. Glad you got everything sorted out though I know how frustrating it was. Question, did you have any problems with your YouTube app? I had to download an iPhone app called Jasmin because my YouTube app wouldn't give me video. The only thing I could think it was is the versions are different now and I don't think it is compatible. I know I have the right cable because netflix and the GPS app Waze works. Either way I'm all set luckily because of the Jasmin app and it is a YouTube client so I signed in with my YouTube info and I was able to use all my playlists which is awesome! Anyway. Thanks again for posting.
