The instructions are for orienting, and to buy lubricant for re-application. The parts ship lubricated from the test fit, which his guy removed.

Same thing applies to engine building at a machine shop . are you or not going to run a tap thru all the bolt holes on the engine block and cyl heads to clean the oil and debris . Or are you going to blame fault on the machine shop when you snap a head bolt

*which you also know would be removed*

You're acting like this guy went out on his own to get it cerakoted. What I gathered from the PM convo is that he was also helping you out, as (I'm guessing here) you would like to add cerakote as an option for future sales. I say that because of this.

And I also knew that his cerakoter would give him care/lubrication instructions, because I am not qualified for that.

I was more concerned that he didn't know what the provided shims were for, as it turned out his guy threw them out. That part was definitely my fault.

My .02 is that in this scenario, it's both parties fault/no ones fault.

I say this, because this is a unique situation where you're both treading unknown waters, as this is the first time your knob has been coated. Would I be annoyed if I was OP? Shit yeah I'd be, but it comes with the territory of custom stuff. He has to accept it.

As a vendor though, the solution would be to make and send him another knob, free of charge and chalk it up as a learning moment. Then everyone is happy and you can offer cerakote in the future, with specific instructions.

We used to argue on job sites that people were ignoring caution tape and lifting it and walking into the construction area. The plant had a meeting and one of the offenders claimed it said caution. He claimed he was cautious when he lifted the tape and walked through. The plant then had to buy danger do not enter tape because caution tape wasn’t specific enough.

You want to argue their weren’t instructions? If you need instructions to install a shift knob and then tighten it while the threads are gummed up (the OP’s assertion) then you shouldn’t be allowed to own tools. The world can’t make fine print fast enough to combat the stupidity of those who take no responsibility for their own actions. So long as someone else perpetually has to think for you there will be more situations like this in your life.

OP was made aware of piece inside to prevent galling. OP says nah fam its coo. Probably didn't check to see if it was still in there after cerakoter sprayed. Over tightens piece onto shifter in excitement and then blames op for not using supplied orientation pieces, that for all we know were tossed by the cerakoter. Has OP even contacted the Cerakoter to see if any instructions, or pieces were packaged with the part, or is OP just leaving information out intentionally because he didn't read the instructions? OP Recieved product Apr 6th and did not install until Apr 27th. OP had Ample time to inspect part for any imperfections or defects. Instead, threw caution to the wind and screwed it on.

Unbeknownst to him, I intended to send him another knob (not now, though... Fuck no).

I didn't, however intend on giving monetary compensation for what he spent to fix the collateral damage. There are PM's that you haven't seen about that.

But yes, I agree with you otherwise.

Why didn't you just come straight out and say that then? Say something similar along the lines to what I said, offer to ship him a knob, and see what he says? If he still refused, then yeah, he'd be in the wrong.

edit: I see this quote, but I'm confused. In the messages we saw, you stated that the threads could be coated, and didn't specify not to coat the inner threads

Well apparently this knob has like 5 different parts to it. So I'd say instructions are warranted.

Well that's a pretty ridiculous thing to do, and poor customer service.

If any of it was your fault YOU are at fault. You can't fault a vendor of a product for something you did or modified. He admitted he wasn't familiar with that process. That was all on you once it left his possession. That is bs to even file a dispute with PayPal over this. Please make sure you never purchase anything from me. For full disclosure you should make PayPal aware of this thread in their decision.
