I don't understand why I'm getting such awful mileage.

I drive and I just see the gas gauge fall. I have a scan gauge and just watching it as I drive makes me sick. Nothing has really changed recently. I practically drive like grandpa and it rarely gets over 2000 RPMs. My scan gauge says my average MPG per tank is about 12.6 That is ridiculus for a Toyota. I might as well be driving a full size truck. I'm just venting but jesus. Any others experiencing this?

Are you sure your scangauge is calibrated correctly?

What do you calculate your mpg at using odometer and fuel up gallons.

How many miles since a TB and MAF clean? I don't get 12.6 with 1000# of load and a 2500# trailer, so yeah something is wrong.

You're running a 285 tire, so that's automatically gonna be eating gas. If you regear, it might help it out.

Is your scangauged calibrated right, and are you resetting it correctly after each fill up?

When was your last major service? Looks like you have an '05 so you prolly have a lot of miles on your rig.

    Spark plugs
    Syn oil and filter
    TB and MAF cleaning
    Air filter
    Diff fluids and transfer case
    Lube u-joints
    Tranny fluid flush
    Proper tire pressure

I traded up to a manual, I'm bone stock and getting horrible mileage. I would be happy to average 13 right now and my last taco averaged over 18. So yes, I too am experiencing this. Don't know what to do either, already drive like an old man.

OP, if you're actually interested in what others are getting for mpg then fuelly is probably your best bet as opposed to forum responses. Be sure to compare to the same year and engine size but average is 18/19.

I just cleaned and recharged my K&N last oil change about 2000miles ago.
I'm getting a little better than what my scangauge is saying but not by much. Just an adjustment from the 33s.
How many miles for those to be cleaned. I've never done it and I just went over 97000 miles.

I've done all of those fairly recently except the TB and MAF cleaning and tranny flush.

Jesus, Im getting about 22 on the freeway with 2 people in the truck and about 19 with 4 people. Thinking about getting some 265's in a couple months though. Anyone know if I should regear or is the difference small enough not to matter?

I just put a new set of 285 MT and now I wish I would have bought some 265 ATs...I don't know if the tread pattern has much of a difference.

You don't need to regear for 265's.

Run 91 E0. Saw about 3-4mpg increase. Well worth the extra price. Get 350miles per tank on average.

Ive had 3 2nd gen tacos, owned all 3 from brand new, 2 have had a TRD SC, one manual, one auto. Best mileage ive seen on auto or stick is 16 driving like grandpa. On average i get around 14 with 266/70/17's driving it like i stole it. I honestly think these trucks get worse mileage babying the throttle instead of driving normally. Your mileage is gonna suck no matter what, auto or manual, SC or NA. Just he way it is... These things get shit for gas mileage ...just part of the deal i guess. To those people out there getting 18 or 19 mpg, im convinced there is something different about the trucks that get really good mileage cause i know I'll neve see those #s and i love the truck anyway :)

Something's not right as I average 19. How about disconnecting the battery (resetting the computer)?

I'll try that next tank. I've been getting pretty bad mileage, but getting the air pressure worked out should help. I've been mostly city but it would be nice to not have to stop every 225 miles for fuel.

i found the same thing.. if i kept it around 2k rpms i got worse mileage than driving like i didnt care about MPG. 14 was my best recently with 285's. I was getting 270 miles per tank stock in the summer.. Now with 285's and winter i get about 230 miles per tank.

Well I don't feel as bad then if you guys are getting about the same. I do think I am going to reset the computer, clean Tb and MAF, and differential fluids. When you guys talk about using seafoam, where do you use it and how. Is there a thread somewhere?
