Been driving Tacos since I was 19 and I am approaching 38. I have owned 2 1st Gens and one 2nd Gen and bought my 18 TRD OR 4X4 back in March. I am one of those Tacoma guys that is beyond brand loyal. The truth and my experience though....

The auto trans on these trucks are just not for me. It took driving 4k miles in mine to talk myself into it and try to love it, but it kept driving me insane regardless of how "normally" it was behaving. I am not much on mods and tunes, so OV is not something I'd be willing to do. Im all about keeping one very stock.

SO...... I did a thing today which puts my loyalty to these trucks and money where my mouth is and found a new type of gear shifter unit that made this truck perfect for me again. Without further hesitation.......

2018 TRD OR 4X4 in white with a manual! Parked next to my "old" 18, you cant tell them apart on the outside besides the new one having the tech package and side steps and tinted front windows. NOW i am fully in love again.

Manual: 1 hand on the wheel, the other on your stick.

I’ll take the first one :p

P.S OV tune fixes it 100%. It’s not a mod... rather the way Toyota intended the tranny to shift. We’ll just call it a delayed addition:)

First rule of learning to drive a manual when i was 15. Know how to shift and steer with just your left hand, you need other options for your right hand. If you can't do this you still can't drive a manual (it isn't that hard).

I get beyond annoyed with these click bait titles. Do ya'll get paid per read and I dont realize it?

"Toyota doesn't want you to know this sure fire way to lift your truck 3" with household items"

Glad you're happy with your truck, but next time come straight.

Good choice. I find rather funny that people buy an automatic and complain that it shifts... automatically.

I recently purchased a TRD Off Road Automatic, The first Auto I have bought in 30 Years. I wanted an Access Cab TRD O-R, but was only available with Auto, and also wanted something wife could drive without burning clutch out. So it seems to be always some compromise. Congrats!

Yes my AT shifts a lot but i knew that before I purchased. It doesn't bother me at this point as the shifting is smooth and I don't fixate on it. Coming from a 06' and 02' manual.

I needed an auto due to traffic on my commute and I need a second car my wife can drive. My other car is a manual and I love it but I haven't enjoyed manual truck transmissions in the past (had one and drove 2 others a ton).

That said, I never understand all the hate this auto gets. The way the people complain you'd think it shifts all over the place constantly, even when you are cruising. That's not my experience, although I do question why they decided on 1:1 4th and 2 deep overdrives. I believe if the shortened 4th a bit and made 5th .8-.9:1 then people would stop bitching about it so much because it could drop to 5th for highway acceleration and not have to go to 4th so much. Just my thoughts.
