I was completely stopped, they were going over 20 mph, hit me before they even touched the brakes. I'm waiting on the assessor to come out, but what do you guys think?

I'm worried that the frame is damaged but they'll still try and repair it. I do not want to pay a full monthly payment on a truck that was hit/compromised/is worth less as a result.

Any advice? I love my DCLB SR5, it's perfect, but I also hate the idea of it never being the same.

Insurance companies prefer to total a vehicle. Doubtful it will happen in your case but who knows.

Wow what a mess , glad you are okay . There's a thread in here where we have been checking carvana prices for our used Tacoma's and any with an accident has a great value lose so make sure your insurance gives you a diminished value check .

the reciever is not bent which is a good sign. anything can happen but i think you probably have less damage than expected

I'm no expert but I'm guessing they wont total it out.

However, you should push for a Diminished Value check from the insurance! It's a report that costs around $250 and they do a full on investigation of the value of the vehicle after the wreck is. Then you should be able to easily get a check for the difference from the insurance company. I received a $4300 DV check when a couple month old civic of mine was rear ended roughly 4 years ago. Do some more research on it before you do anything though.

The bed is crumpled, and it pushed into the cabin on the right side, denting it pretty good!

Sorry to hear about this OP. Personally, I wouldn't want to keep a vehicle that had that much damage, regardless of the insurance company totalling it or not. You know it will never be the same truck after they fix it.

If it were me, I would take whatever they end up giving me and either get it fixed then trade it (if they choose not to total), or buy a new one (if they choose to total).

Was there a Police Report taken?

I'd be curious if the driver was *busy* on their cell phone. If *I* found out that was the case, I would sue the driver and prosecute them.

I bet your frame is bent...get a good body shop and get it on their frame machine. If it's anywhere close to out of spec, push insurance to total it.

Good luck with a diminished value claim. I fought Geico when one of their clients rear ended me. I ended up with a small settlement, but not enough to offset a bad Carfax.

They're not going to "total" that, even if the frame is bent. They'll pull it back into spec, even if it costs $15k. I got rear-ended in a similar situation (by a Tundra). Little frame buckle above the rear wheel well.

Get it fixed to your satisfaction and just move on. You'll kill yourself if you focus on Carfaxes and DIMINISHED VALUE CLAIMS and all the crap TacoWorld is about to dump on you. Just get it fixed up and forget it happened and go back to enjoying your truck... it's healthier -- take my word.

It looks as though the frame had to have buckled a bit to allow the bed to impact the cab like that. Now some of that buckling probably sprung back/recovered after impact, but I would bet there is a small amount that didn't, and the frame rails are bent.

From looking at the image I think it will be repairable. The hitch is still sitting straight which indicates there isn't any frame damge. These trucks have crumple zones that are supposed to do that. It looks worse than it is and I'm sure everything will be ok. In the long run no one was hurt and thats the important thing.

This stuck out to me as a very odd way to think about your loss. (These numbers are made up but you get the idea) Your truck isn't a $400/mo truck, it's a $25,000 truck that you put $2k down, paid the loan down by $3k, and is currently worth $24k if you were to sell it before the accident. It's your $24k asset in which you have $3k equity, and this accident will take that $24k value down at least $6k IMO, meaning that you're now underwater because of someone else's stupidity.

Unless you get a $6k+ diminished value check from the insurance company, you are not being made whole.

I agree with the others, try to get a new truck.

Bed separated from the cab with a bent frame when I was rear ended. I told the other insurance I do not want repaired frame as it wasn't like that before I got hit. They totaled it and paid out.

My insurance totaled my 2014 once the bottom of bed was bowed due to bend in frame.

I was tapped on receiver hitch. Fenders and tail gate no damage. I had same markers on cab from bed and frame flexing...!

New frame is $5600+ and many body shops wont do a change out. It is a looser. One bay for your truck, one bay for new frame on a rack. One bay for parts comung off your truck .
Most shops tell me besides being a loss or no profit in a frame change, their insurance wont cover them....

Ask for COMPS! When you get an offer, my adjuster used market comps from san diego to seattle to value my total. My check was for almost as much as i paid initially for mine.
Mine was driveable, insurance sent to auction, sold at auction in 5 days, a minority shop pulled the frame and sold it as toraled title.
