So yesterday in the mail I received a "important notice" from toyota. Paper work had recall listed on the front. I chuckled a bit. Anywho, opened the letter, I have the "rear diff leak". I checked my VIN number and "there is no recalls on this vehicle at this time". Like what? What's my next plan of action?

Look at your diff and see if it's leaking

Next plan should be to take it to Toyota so they can inspect it and if it's leaking they will give you a rental like they did me on Monday. I am now the proud owner of a f'ing frontier while I pay for a toyota.

Sooner the better as they will need to order parts for the truck and part orders can take 2 weeks to 2 months. Have to remember this was a stop sale recall. So I am sure the dealers got the trucks on the lot that were for sale first then worry about us little people that already bought one. It's a cluster F no doubt. Just hoping that they do the right thing if it's already damaged. I have heard of a couple of guys that had it fixed and it's leaking again. So now they are in for a new rear axle.

Yeah they are way too big of a company to take on that kind of lasting liability. My dad works for UP railroad and has told me some crazy stuff they've written off to avoid future liabilities.

You don't know that for sure. I took my truck in and they torqued the bolts and sent me on my way.

No I don't but, but as per my conversation with my service writer.. if it shows seepage then they are suppose to hold the truck. I can only go by my own experience and problems.

May be a situation like mine, was at the dealer 35 minutes while they torqued my bolts and sent me on my way. Sure it will work out just fine for you. Have a good evening..

My sr5 has seepage but they didn't hold my truck because my service writer said it was minor. Dealer is supposed to perform the recall when parts are in. Been 2 weeks. Just keeping an eye on it.

I've seen other photos of "seepage". They weren't that wet. Theirs looked like dry stains.

Meaning rear diff leak. And replace the whole rear end. Or just the guts?

man you some folks here got some shitty dealership. the dealership i go to are understanding as fuck, they gave people the option to still drive their trucks if they feel comfortable about it specially if it just as a small weeping. Or get a rental, and if they have anything big available, if you're willing to wait, they will try to get you that rental car. sorry bud

This is Los Angeles. The same rule don't apply here as no one wants the liability issues.

I took mine in for service and they said they had to keep it until they are able to get the parts to repair it. They said likely September at the earliest. They gave me a Corolla as a loaner. I said that doesn't work, I need a truck. They said they have no fucks to give and that a Corolla is all they will give me. So now my truck is sitting outside for at least three months in the sun instead of in my garage and I can't do truck stuff. I would hold off on taking any truck in for service or the recall until they have parts or you could be without your truck for quite a while.

I took my truck in today for my service appointment that I made a month ago to ensure a loaner in case the shit hit the fan.
A month ago my diff was dry, yesterday I checked it and walla 2 wet spots :annoyed:.
So here I go to the service department anyway.

Pulled in and before the SA could say anything I asked him "do you have the parts for the rear diff repair?"
    He said "no"
I said "fk that then I'm not letting you service my truck and take it hostage, call me when you get the parts in"
He said "no worries, you didn't note that concern on your service ticket so we won't even look at it "
I said "so you mean to tell me while my truck is on the lift and you see wet spots your not going to take it hostage?"
    He said "no"

So I let um service my truck and 2 hours later it was ready to be picked up. After fob in hand
I then asked him "when are you going to get the parts in?"
He said " we're still waiting and have 80 trucks held waiting for parts"
I said "WTF ?? You guys can't order parts in bulk?"
He says "we don't order parts until we have inspected the vehicle "
Again I say" WTF ? You mean to tell me that if I wait 6 months until you play catch up and I make an appointment, your not going to order parts until you inspect it?"
He said "yes, that's how it works for a recall "
I said "well you better have a Tacoma loaner waiting for me and a new CPS sensor on the parts list"
He said "I'll make that happen "

I said "okay , so what about the damp foam under my carpet up front ?"
He pointed out a bad seal on the lower rear part of the cab and says it needs to go to a body shop because they have to pull my bed off :annoyed:. I said " cya in 6 months bye"

Still love my Taco btw ....
