I gotta say I am not super happy with my '16 Taco after pulling trailer.

I realize the Tacoma isn't designed as being a Tow Rig, but its got a towing package. My Sled trailer with sleds in it is about 2,100 -2,200 pounds. WOW.... 3rd Gear and screaming RPM's on EVERY Single Hill.... No Tow/Haul mode to help with shifting??? The manual shifting mode... hahaha what a JOKE!!!! I try to put it in 4th to hold it there on a hill, nope. Still shifts to 3rd. I don't even understand that the retarded thought process was with the manual shift deal, it won't even hold the gear you put it in. Upshifts and downshifts out of it.

I would be more understanding if I was trying to pull a 2k pound trailer with a 3-4k pound car but Christ, and all Aluminum Triton Trailer and 2 light weight 2 stoke sleds??? WOW!!!!

Anyone have input on Re-Gearing?? Gear sets from 05-15's interchange? Im sure once my lift and 33's are on this Turd won't use 6th unless its off a cliff.

I pulled my trailer (steel homemade) loaded up and was loving it. I was normally pulling it with my Subaru which is not really a great bench mark however I think this is all a matter of perspective.

No issues hauling my 4000lb Jeep over 700 miles. No shifting issues in manual mode. In Auto, it did search for gears, but that's operator error. Once I did what was recommended (manual) the truck found its groove.

Did you have the ECT button on? It is basically a tow, haul mode.

Well its not manual shift mode, its a maximum gear. So clearly your Taco thinks a lower gear would be better do you have a v6?

    ECT is tow/haul mode.
S mode is not really a manual mode; think of it as a top gear limiter/overdrive eliminator.
I'd try S4 or S5 with ECT on.
AI/D is like eco mode and was designed by Satan himself.

What kind of grades and how fast you going?

Is manual mode recommended for towing? I know of the ECT button is supposed to help. But does the manual book actually recommend manual mode?

Yea there you go. We pull a large trailer with the shop truck Ford 150 v6 loaded with 2 bikes or a sled and you can feel it but it's not so bad over all.

Coming from a v8 yea it will feel gutless but me coming from a 4 banger I laughed at how it pulled my trailer along.

The ¨manual shift deal¨ is not what you were thinking. All it does is let you select the highest gear you would like the truck to go into. If you put it in 4, it will not go any higher.

So does it still upshift and downshift by itself? I thought you could still do it manually by pushing up or down.

once it ran in 2nd for a while and my speed was down and it shifted to 3rd, I kept trying to get it back into 2nd and it would just beep.

How heavy is this trailer / setup that you are concerned with warping rotors? Have you weighed it?

Its a Steep hill, forget what the Grade is, but I warped rotors on my wife Silverado 1500 on that hill in the past. So I just drop to a lower gear now. That was on the way back with No trailer.

yeah, it's no different than a 2nd gen with different slots for L-2-3-4 and D. Just a different way of accomplishing the same thing. It's only ever going to limit the top gear and not allow you to hold a gear like a true manual.
