I think they changed it past 2008?

I unno, on mine i can have it all the way on the far left and the AC doesn't come on automatically nor does the fresh air duct do anything.

edit: oops heh okay so they DID change it after 08.

Hahaha, I have never checked in my truck but in our 4runner on cross country highway drives I have and our 4runner with the same engine loses less than 1 mpg with the ac on. That's not even close to 4-40%

1mpg is 5% if it's 19-20, and a/c least effect mpg at highway speeds, it can easily be 20% in city. 40% is certainly possible with a very bad commute.

Since we write off the vehicle as an expense for our real estate company I actually keep track of the miles driven and gallons of fuel purchased in our accounting software in July our avg mpg was 20.62 and for November which is he last full month I have entered it was 21.03 we purchased the vehicle new in June so it could also just be getting slightly better due to engine break in or we could actually be seeing a 0.41 mpg improvement from not running the ac all the time. I was just guessing earlier but yes less than 1mpg. And also not enough that I care about it at all.

Overall MPG doesn't really tell the tale, but whatever. Any MPG saved is worth it to me IMHO. You guys do what you want... I'll do what I want.

Now you have me wondering what you got for Aug, Sept, and Oct?

My mpg is way worse in Nov (26 mpg) compared to July (31+ mpg) but I rarely use A/C in July. If I were to run a/c and get less in July than Nov I'd have to conclude A/C cost me over 5mpg.

Comparing July to Nov doesn't really compare with or without A/C.

Way too many factors to consider.

Fueleconomy.gov states "Operating the air conditioner on "Max" can reduce MPG by roughly 5–25% compared to not using it." You can believe it or not, but even if it's 5% that is not insignificant.

It does here I live in Colorado it is 90-102 in July and 30-50 in november that is why I used those 2 months because in July I have to have the ac on all the time and in November it never got used.

I guess that depends on what you consider significant we average about 1800 miles per month at 20.62 mpg and 3.50 per gallon a 5% difference would come to 183.17 per year. If that's worth saving for some more power to you but for 12 bucks a month I've got better things to pay attention to.

Sorry I'm done posting off topic now.

I find when setting to the center floor heat setting I get decent air flow to the windshield, so I just use that instead of the defrost. That's my way of avoiding A/C with defrost.

It is often said A/C in winter dries the air but that isn't really accurate in cold weather. A/C actually is heating outside air if it is colder than the evaporator temp which can be 30-40F. If it's already -5F your A/C IS a heater.

A/C only removes moisture if it lowers outside air below it's dew point, which is not the case in cold weather. Heat changes cold dry air into hot dry air without help from A/C.

I'm in CO too, but 30-50F does make my mpg drop, your method of comparison is a fail.

I think the original topic is well drawn out at this point.

Yea, I didn't realize but it actually pipes air to the windshield when on the 'feet only'/floor setting. Learn something new every day!

Going from an 06 to a 12 and I have to say this feature is lame. I think this is for retarded people that get confused by buttons.
