I know nothing about nothing but diesel engines are built to withstand much higher compression, thus making them more robust?

if the transmission didnt go into 5th gear 800rpm when cruising at 25 in a school zone, then i would agree.

I wasn’t comparing the Tundra’s turbo to the new Tacoma’s in my comment. I was replying to a previous comment that someone said turbos have basically been just as reliable as NA engines for the past 20 years, and I was using all the issues of the Tundra’s turbo 6 as an example of how I don’t agree at all with that. A turbo charged 4 cylinder has to work 50% harder, 100% of the time compared to our tried and true V6 (and the same goes for a turbo 6 compared to the ultra reliable iforce V8). There’s no way around the fact that more wear occurs internally in a smaller turbo engine that is putting out the same or more HP and torque as a 6.

No. When the truck is in the garage, the Miata is out of the garage.

2019 MT here. Test drove the new i4 turbo MT the other day. Was going into it with high expectations. Perhaps it's my driving style, but I didn't really feel a significant difference. Yes, more noticeable torque down low but when I got on it, I feel like the power difference was negligible compared to my '19. Tranny felt smooth and sedan-like and clutch was very light. Overall nice truck but happy with my 19 .

I was pretty excited about the 4G.

To say the least, I’m super disappointed with it so far. I haven’t driven 4G MT yet, but honestly I have zero power complaints with my truck and I’m not stock. I have no idea when ppl are saying on here that it’s “a turd, gutless, no torque” etc. I tow, off-road, take long road trips and absolutely zero issues in power department.

Learn how to drive maybe? I don’t know :)

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
They do have enough power for most situations. Except when I am loaded up for a longer trip. Taking the connector from Kelowna to Merritt, as I go up toward Pennask summit there are spots I am doing max 90kmh in 3rd gear at 4,000rpm and for a very long stretch. Push it harder on that hill and roll the dice.

I always do early mornimg for that reason so it does not overheat, or worse set on fire like so many other vehicles on that stretch.

Getting passed by pretty much every other loaded truck on those stretches.

It is a V6 though and with a heavy load it can’t be expected to keep up with V8s. My tires are only 1 size larger than stock, and no lift. BFG KO2 at 265 75 16.

When I had the smaller tires on for sure it handled that stretch much better. It was 110kmh at 3000rpm on those same stretches with the smaller tires, and better fuel mileage. That 1 inch makes that much difference under load on steep climbs.

Only went one size bigger on the tires when I could not find a set of KO2s at 265 70 16.

i can only imagine how guys with the huge offroad tires would react with a heavy load going up that climb for the first time in summer when its 90F or hotter.

“Hey, WTF is wrong with my truck on this hill! No problem, 3rd gear, 5,000rpm and just give er. Oh shit, where is that fire extingusher.”

BTW, I do that climb 20 times each Spring/Summer. Amazing how even new model BMW, Mercedes, etc are stopped roadside, hood up and having a nice steam bath. They must have really been pushing hard. Not to mention all the burned up cars and trucks.

Last year I drove past 2 really bad 18 wheeler wrecks that used those insanely steep, dirt covered runaway lanes going downhill. Both were cab sideways in the bush with their loads over sideways on the other side of the lane. Scary stuff. Tow and rescue crews were on scene.

Ha! Funny, I too just rented a 2024 OR. Yesterday, I returned from Colorado. I was the first to rent it from AVIS. I drove it about 400 miles in Denver and front range traffic, and on Saturday, I did drive it on dirt roads between Cripple Creek and Canon City. I agree, Toyota does have a winning transmission/engine combo.

    Comments:
    • The turbo is zippy. Very slight lag. I had to keep my foot off the peddle as otherwise it just keeps going! It’s sporty in traffic, and in dirt, as I didn’t feel like I had to drive it hard to get it and keep it going like my 3rd gen and 4Runner.
    • It does have a bit of noise when the turbo is not engaged. One time, I thought a loud car was driving beside me.
    • It had the larger screen, which I found distracting for its size and placement. I kept turning it off each time I started the engine.
    • I don’t care for the interior, dash. IMHO, it looks busy.
    • The rear tailpipe does hang low.
    • It had lane centering. I tried that out in a canyon, and it did a pretty good job. But kind of weird feeling the steering wheel turn on it's own.
    • I got about 23 mpg, driving it fairly hard. The range was similar due to the smaller gas tank.

    NtBpfD_3bcee8381e88fa4ad9e583165f5cf4a953cffda3.jpg

But, I won’t be getting rid of my 2019 AC OR as it’s paid for. :)

Yes at higher elevations and fully loaded the 3.5 will be 4KRPM+ range, I honestly don’t think it’s hurting anything.

I really think having a MT and 4.30 rear end makes driving experience better, even though the 2 2019 TRD ORs with AT that I test drove felt just fine to me on highway and city. Of course not the same as driving at high elevations and fully loaded.

Shit man, I’ve seen those “runaway lanes” before and can’t even imagine how scary it must be when you lose your brakes on an 18 wheeler…

    Wow. That explains it.

Anyway, after driving my 3rd gen again, I have to say, I miss the 4th gen's powertrain. Too bad I can't stuff that in my 3rd gen!

Purchased Toyota Certified, with Vijay bumpers, additional lights, and Falken Wildpeaks on Fuel rims. Prev owner apparently painted the grill.
3 pedal gang member here as well, I've only had my truck for a few months, but I'm happy - just getting back into the habit of rowing through the gears, remembering that 6th exists, and that reverse swapped sides.
