There is a dealer in the area who has one for sale, it is used. It has approximtely 80xxx miles on the clock, a 4.0 MT which I am looking for. Tires used 30% wear; brakes done. Dealer told me it was prepped as though Certified, even though they say it is not because of the mileage. Now I am in a car I love, 2016 Civic EX-T but there are issues, a Civic cannot be a truck, and there are reasons to do this, mainly I need the bed space of a PU.

However, in talking w/ the stealer I realized if anything goes wrong, my tough luck.

So, how about it folks, I would like to hear your opinions, and this is a friendly inquiry and I appreciate any input. FTR I have been at my job for 2 years, I am doing ok, but I have not a lot of savings. I also read about that younger fella who asked a similar question and I am open to what you folks have to say, I have always wanted a truck, but it is not a deal breaker if I have to wait.

I should mention, I am in negative equity from a previous JEEP mistake (Just Empty Every Pocket) and I realize these are very different vehicles.

I guess I am looking for feedback on this as far as dependability and so on, and also wondering if I could just wait for the 2018's and get a new SR w/ the warranty and so on. It makes me a bit nervous that I'd have no warranty, however I would have a solid truck and I do like it (drove it today). And a TRDOR w/ a manual is not available in the SR, any input on that little fact is appreciated.

For the record I'd have a loan from current CU and Toyota is out of that loop, however the trade in is the big $$$ question.

Fire away, ask any questions if you like. I am not in a big hurry, however I do like the idea of a PU and this one really does appeal to me. Thanks!

You should be fine. Its a Toyota, itll last forever and the miles are good. I wouldnt worry about the truck reliability, just more of the price and if you can afford.

80k miles for a Tacoma really isn't much. Mine has 66k and it drives pretty much like the day I drove it off the lot new. You do have to consider how the previous owner maintained it.

Well, you are already upside down from the jeep, then you are gonna be even more upside down from the current car. Sounds like a bad financial decision to me

Thats true enough. Then again, I am single and no other financial issues. The loan would be separated out by the CU.
I also saw this, but never heard of these guys. Sounds too good...etc.

I would advise you to take it to a good independent mechanic, have him go over it with a fine tooth comb, if he gives you a good nod, buy it. If not, work on paying down your current loan by upping your payment to what a new truck would cost you. Keep looking for that perfect truck, when you find it, you will know for sure you can afford it. One thing to keep in mind, your fuel bill will double , going from the civic to the taco. If you put on a lot of miles, it could become an issue.

I bet you find a new one will be almost the same price.

Used Tacoma trucks get marked up a lot.

To answer your question on reliability:
My MY13 TRD OR MT AC w/ roughly 75k on the clock has had exactly 0 issues.

All she’s ever needed was fuel, oil changes every 5k, spark plugs every 30k & gear oil every 30k.

This week I did my front pads - 15% left and I replaced all 4 shocks with MY17 take offs.

The 4.0 liter is a great motor and these 2’nd gens are rock solid. If you have doubts on maintenance done you could do a preemptive 90k service. Pretty much everything above (save the brakes and shocks) and include a coolant flush.

Sure you’d have to drop some coin on the parts or even more if you had a shop do all the work but after that you’d be golden.

Is the truck your looking at a MT w/ a 6’ bed? If so I’d strongly consider it. The TRD OR isn’t made in that configuration any longer....unless you live in Canada.

Keep the Civic until you have decent savings built up and are in the clear from
    that Jeep mess
