    Howdy all,
I got CEL and P0500 error code and speedometer quit working. Planning on changing the ABS sensors since I have on hand anyway, (ABS light always stays on, I nicked the ring on RR bearing on last bearing change, so ABS light being on doesn't offer any clues) any other sensors on trans or anything I should look at?

    Thanks!

Check Fuse #31 under your coin drawer left of your steering column. That fuse causes all kinds of problems, including speedometer. It's a 10A microblade fuse, red in color.

If it’s not a fuse, the VSS signal isn’t making it to the cluster from the skid control computer. It’s either a wheel speed sensor, the skid control computer, or a broken wire in that path.

    Pulling ABS codes may help

Assuming you have an auto, the speedo is driven from the ABS system, not a sensor on the tranny.

No abs codes, before I changes abs sensors today, a couple times speedometer started working again for like a minute or 2, then stopped. After changing abs sensors same thing. Thinking maybe nicked a wire somewhere doing latest lift, but that was like 2 months ago. Guess I'll start tracing wires. Open to any ideas you guys have. Thanks!

Watch vehicle speed on a scan tool while driving. If the speedo stops working and you lose the vehicle speed on the scanner at the same time, suspect a sensor issue.

If the speedo stops working and you still have a vehicle speed on the scanner, suspect a gauge/cluster issue

Speedometer and scan drop off at same time.

Another odd thing, if I clear codes, clear CEL, then start driving when speedometer isn't working, sometimes CEL will come back on right away, sometimes take 5-10 minutes of driving before CEL comes on again. I tried driving steady slow, quick acceleration, fast then slow, etc doesn't seem to make a difference how quick I get CEL. When speedometer does work for a bit, it also random? Ive strictly used digital GPS speedometer since 2010, so the speedometer not working doesn't really affect my driving, more worried about how this could affect performance and any negative side effects to engine and trans. operation.

My transmission's shifting seemed to be a little off when I had a P0500 code. Also, I can't pass inspection with the check engine light on so I had to fix mine.

Since you have no ABS codes, it's probably the skid control computer, the cluster, or the wiring between the two. Unless you can find a broken wire, you really need access to an oscilloscope to troubleshoot this code...it's not going to be easy for DIY'ers.

Update... I changed ABS sensors like mentioned above, no change. I crawled underneth and checked all the wires and connections and loosened the relocate brackets for the wires we installed when doing the last lift, made sure there was plenty of slack, then tightened everything up. Cleared codes, no CEL and speedometer works now. Think I must have crimped or nicked a wire some where. Now just need to find where, for the time being, all good. Thanks for the help guys!
