Well, the dealer probably knew and it was probably priced accordingly.

But the salesperson not knowing/understanding, that's so believable...

2014 was a low production year, kbb can't even give me a valuation.

I just know how it all went down. I got a little better than I expected at a price I thought was decent. The ad is now gone but I probably wouldn’t post it just to prove a point to ONE person anyway!

I had the same sort of fortunate “mistake”. Truck was listed as an SR5. Didn’t have any badging either. I am unsure that my truck had the badging to start with, but doesn’t matter to me… I got the OR I ultimately wanted! Winning!

Yeah I at first thought the wheels had been swapped and the options were just upgrades the original owner did. While researching my lift options I noticed it had the bilsteins so I had a 27yr Former Toyota mechanic check the numbers and they showed for off road. Regular VIN check didn’t specify :eek: but I didn’t really care at that point anyway. But now, because I’m kinda ‘by the book’ on lots of things, I can feel free to put a custom TRD Off Road decal on the back without feeling funny! I wish somebody made one with a gold prospecting theme…that’s one of my hobbies.

they just mark it up 20% and sell it .....the only person that messed up was the person that did the trade in appraisal, everybody else just follows what he labels it as

    Congrats!

I would think the fact that it had no turn-to-start key would have given it away...

    And the black fender flares...

Well I’m not (or wasn’t) real familiar with the Tacoma, so stuff like that would easily get by me while I’m focused on mechanical ‘inspection’. I did have an ‘06 Tacoma for less than a year, and previous to that I owned just shy of a dozen Hi-Lux trucks over a span of 15 years or so. THOSE I know quite well, but this new fancy stuff, well, lol, I said I’d NEVER buy anything so new! But here I am. I like it so far!

This exact same thing happened to me when I bought my ‘09 11 years ago. Dealer’s sales people are not that knowledgeable on trim specifics, lol.

Good find OP. Sure feels great to find a good bargain.

Sounds like you paid fair market value for a TRD offroad. They are technically all SR5s.

That said this is a common tactic as well to make it seem like the buyer is getting a good deal.

Congrats on a rare win with a dealer... :hattip:

Not surprised that they wouldn't know what the trim level is. When I bought mine new, the salesman was surprised it can with a sunroof and other things that were standard equipment on my trim.

Congrats on the truck, these non Toyota Dealerships probably just knew it as a Tacoma and was happy to make a sale.

I had a similar experience at the dealership.

I had to teach the salesman that the hood scoop wasn’t functional. He also told me that my truck didn’t have a power rear sliding window (it does) and he didn’t know it had apple car play :smack:
