I know I’m imagining it but still convinced our glass sucks

Gotta agree. The 'factory' glass is crap.
I had 20K on mine when.... Parked it one night.... Everything was fine..... Got up the next morning and saw a crack starting just about where the driver-side wiper post was at. It spread very quickly.
Got it replaced a little later (Aftermarket from who the hell knows where... Probably some Chinese junk....) BUT.... At 49K miles now... No Prob.
The other interesting thing (But not to my wallet) was, I have a Snug Top shell on the back. Had that put on at 10K miles. At 30K miles... One day, just backing out of the driveway, I heard a loud 'BANG'!! The rear glass on the shell just completely shattered. For no reason... It just did. And there was no way I could have backed up into anything... It's a clear wide-open street.
After all this, I'm just convinced that 'glass' these days is just total garbage and it's a roll-of-the-dice. That can get VERY expensive after awhile.

4 different makes in my household and get cracks and chips repeatedly. I just think the quality in all glass has either gone down hill or people delivering loam and gravel are buying stock in safelite.

I just had the windshield replaced in my '22 (14K) last week by the dealer. They installed a Toyota Pilkington windshield. I had spotted a half inch diameter delamination right above the driver in the blackened area just above the dotted shading.

The repair order states "Wind tech confirmed concern found stress fracture with no physical/outside damage."

Interesting thing is the new windshield is different than the one from the factory. There is considerably less shading across the top of the windshield. I questioned this and supposedly they are waiting on Toyota to get back to them about it.

Houston .......... we have a problem!

There are 4 different windshield options from factory. If they don't order via vin or visual inspection all will work besides the pre TSS models.
You likely had the no 3rd visor frit installed. Curious to see what excuse they come back with.

I suppose I've been lucky. The glass in my TRD OR has been fine. I don't note any chips or cracks, just typical loud highway noise.

My JK was a LOT worse in regard to glass, particularly windshields.

I didn’t even get a month out of my factory windshield . Cracked instantly from a tiny chip , same thing happened to my friends Tacoma same year . The factory windshields are terrible .

My truck had just 86 miles on it when a rock hit it. It cracked all the way across within 3 miles... The replaacement lasted until just 2 weeks ago. I will wait to replace it as long as I can.

The Toyota glass doesn’t suck. The state of the roads in the United States is what sucks. I lived in Montana for a while, didn’t drive a Toyota there I had a Dodge. I put a windshield in that damn thing at least once a year if not twice.

The reason being rocks on the road. Doesn’t matter to the manufacture or will it’s aftermarket glass or factory glass. A rock being thrown from a tire 60 mile an hour while I’m driving 60 mile an hour, the glass just flat out won’t take it.

I would agree but as others have posted, there is no offending rock or chip, the crack started from the top of the glass and spread, this is my 2nd truck to do this my 17, and similar experiences by others.

I've had one windshield replaced and I have filled a chip in the current one. I think modern car windshields in general have more issues than just Tacoma windshields. Although, that being said, the windshields on these trucks are pretty vertical compared to many other vehicles so it takes the impact more directly than others, in my experience. Also one of the reasons the visibility in the rain isn't great compared to other vehicles I've owned and driven.

A little glass talk, first thing windshield glass is laminated for keeping occupants in side the car on impact for those that choose not to wear a seatbelt or to try to keep objects out. It consists of 2 pieces of glass laminated to a thin piece of vinyl. Imperfections can occur in the manufacturer of glass such as bubbles waves. I used to have that statement in my phone from glass manufacturers before I retired because I would go out to calls about people bitching about bubbles in home windows. Not often but it was tough as a supplier to eat that cost if we couldn't get the manufacturer to warranty it. The side windows have tempered glass in them, if you notice they shatter when they break, into pieces. Since glass in windshields are some times curved it is poured into a mold when made. I've worked with glass for close to 40 yrs and could go into more depth but it wouldn't be relevant. But I have replaced one windshield in my truck and I'm thankful for how it is made because some moron didn't tie his shit down and and when it came off his trailer. It broke both sides of the glass. And left it shattered about the size of ones head. If it wasn't for the clear vinyl between the pieces of glass my wife could have been killed. All that said it isn't tempered glass and it is easier to break

If it’s any consolation to Tacoma owners, FJ’s are much worse: Same Toyota-grade glass, mounted vertically. You’ll get Christmas cards from the local windshield replacement companies.

There are only 2 types of glass. Glass that has cracked and glass that will crack.

Do you know where I can find any documentation on the 4 different variants? I would like to be prepared when they contact me.

Seems to to be at least for me only 23K miles on my truck and might be on my third windshield soon....... First one was unlucky as something fell from a tree and cracked it right on the edge. Current one was driving on the highway and saw a rock or something fly out of another pickup bed and right into the middle of my 2 week old windshield and cracked it. Waiting to see if the cold will expand it but hopefully not. At least my insurance replaced it for free but my last vehicle had 183k miles on it and think we replaced it once.

Got one this morning leaving work. Started as a rock chip on the highway, then after leaving breakfast coming out of the parking lot heard a crack and seen it grow into this. 20k miles on the truck.
