I guess to answer the question of what I feel the issue is, I was truthfully surprised to see a 10yr old truck selling for $18k, regardless of brand. I hadn’t ever really looked at used pricing for 2nd Gens and this showed up in my FB feed so I was just caught off guard. I suppose my post probably came across negative, and that was just a result of ignorance, lol. I am grateful the Taco has such good resale, just didn’t think that good after a decade.

I traded in my '10 for $18K in '17 and it had 60K k miles on it, was in fantastic shape, especially the interior, and some minor minor paint work needed to be done on the exterior. I'm sure their body shop was able to fix it on the cheap.
They probably sold it for over $20k at the time. It was a double cab basic SR5 V6 auto that I paid about $24K for.
I looked at a used, coming off lease '07 when I bought the '10. It was $2K less than buying my new truck, though it was a sport. Dealer wouldn't come down on price, so I decided to buy new.
Trading it in was a no brainer, boy do these trucks hold value if well taken care of.

I’m very tempted to trade my 09 in on a new one but it’s paid off and I don’t really want a car payment...

Used Tacomas are not worth buying in most cases.

Sounds about right to me. I got 22k for my '07 Tacoma in 2013. As I shopped around for new Tacomas, even the very used ones with high mileage were only 5-6 grand less than buying a brand new one. Before that, I sold my 2003 single cab prerunner for around 12k. The resale on these trucks is amazing, which is why many people buy them.

It’s a good deal. I sold an 08 TRD off-road 4x4 for 19k in about an hour after posting it for sale.
