This is a well known historical fact. Toyota has been doing this for years...

    Dunlop AT20's anyone? (non-OffRoad 2nd Gen models)

I enjoy my Cooper ST MAXX. Yet to put them through a real winter yet though....we're still praying for snow here in Montana and it's almost December.

    Exactly what I'm saying.
Only thing that's good with the KO2s vs a few others like the Coopers and such is the KO2s are winter rated. So you can use them all year round if you're in a region that requires you have winter rated and do not want to buy a dedicated set. I personally do not care for it since I run a dedicated winter. No AT will help for the icey conditions here. Need a proper winter rated tire.

similar driving here in the az desert and some forest trails. i'm very surprised at how they've held up in the trails with lots of jagged rocks all over the place. i've beat the sh1t out of those tires and haven't had a single flat.

10k on my goodyears, I've wheeled with them a number of times with no issues.

Crawl control makes up for their lack of grip. They are great for city commutes and the occasional off-road adventure.

Here is some Goodyear+Crawl control action from my trucks maiden off-road journey. (3-weeks old)

I agree with the mud part but other than mud my BFG ATs have been great. Putting a set of ST Maxx's on Friday. I think they will do better in the mud but not expecting much. When it comes to mud my experience has been that a true MT is the only way to go. I had some Buckshot MTs on one my F150 and those things were awesome. They would dig and sling mud until they found something solid. Never got stuck with the Buckshots. I will add one more thing on the BFGs and that is tread life. I have 78,500 miles on my truck and my neighbor told me the other day that I should sell the BFGs. Brother said this past weekend that they would still pass inspection easily. I said yeah but the ST Maxxs have been sitting in the garage waiting 3 months to be installed.

I've found that as soon as the KO2s get muddy they may as well be a racing slick.
Found the ST Maxx performed much better in much (still no where close to a proper MT)

Maybe on Tacomas the tires perform differently, but on my old TJ I had KO2s, ST Maxx and Duratraxs for AT then tried the KM2s.
The KM2s were the best of the tires I tried on the jeep but they were a mud tire. and came with the TJ. had two sets of ST maxx and loved them. Only bought the KO2s and Duratraxs to try them. Wasn't happy with them.
Friend of mine has the ST Pros on his Rubicon and they're great
Another friend has some Toyo MT on his FJ Cruiser and they're pretty nice.

Drove both their rigs and experienced the tires. But from what I experienced when it came to an AT, the ST Maxx were a nice balance between on and off road performance, better than the KO2s. Not significantly better on road, marginally since most ATs like the KO2s and ST Maxx are meh in wet weather. But off road in muddy conditions and lots of rocks they were much better than the KO2s. Even in terms of airing down, I found the ST Maxx get a nicer footprint once aired down to around 16-18psi. Not sure why but just found they seem to get a bit more flex to them, maybe just a different compound?

I feel like I'm the only Tacoma owner that actually doesn't mind the good years lol.

When I first bought the truck before having offroaded it one of my friends who already has the Goodyear Wranglers on his 2nd gen made me think I was going to HATE them, he said the ONLY good thing about them is they last forever, he has 60k miles on his set and they still have some life left. But he said in mud, ice, sand they are HORRIBLE.

I was expecting the worst and planning on immediately swapping them out for Michelin LTX AT2s which I've had a great overall experience with in the past.

However, now that my truck has 5k miles and I've offroaded it almost a dozen times I'm going to keep the good years until they wear out.

I've aired down the goodyears from 12-18psi and thrashed them doing power slides and doughnuts (ripped a Michelin off the beads last time I tried that), I climbed Blowsand in Anza Borrego which surprised me the truck made it, and I've now taken them on snow, mud and deep sand and haven't got stuck yet (although crawl control did save me a couple times).

I'm not in love with them or anything but I certainly wouldn't go spend $ on replacing them they work just fine and I've put them through some shit.

+1, Do I want different tires? sure. But I'm not gonna let a perfectly good set go to waste. Sucks they last that long, I usually upgrade once things wear out.

Do you air down? If you say the tires are good, they must be. You are not shy about complaining.

This is pure gold. Thanks for posting.

I have KO2s, they're good for terrain I usually hit. Don't do a lot of mud stuff. Not the end all be all of tires by any means. I'll probably try something else when they ware out.
