OK here we go. Why do people trade their Tacoma in rather than sell outright? I had three buyers ready to give me full NADA retail two days after posting my 2004 Tacoma for sale on Autotrader. I should probably start a thread or maybe someone has already.[/QUOTE]

I get my truck today. Finally! Trading a 4runner limited. Why trade? Well, I dont have to go through the hassle of advertising, test drives, and everything else that goes with that. Trading is pretty much hassle free. Yes I wont get as much trading as I would have selling outright but I did save almost $2800 in sales tax by trading. Tack that on to your trade value they gave you.

Is that every state or just New York?
I wonder if California does that?

This is the same with WA state. Sales tax is 9.2% and I think there is an additional hit for an auto sale. If you're trading a car of serious value, it quickly eats into the money you make by doing a private party sale.

I love my '16 TRD Sport as well and really have no gripes or complaints. So far it's done what I've wanted it to do. I moved from Denver to the Bay Area and towed 3,000lbs with no problems, installed the factory roof rack and can carry my 14' SUP and surfboards, and although I do love the fit, finish and look of the OEM tonneau cover, I'm awaiting arrival on an ARE Z-Series camper shell that should hopefully be in a week or two after the new year. My thing is, if you don't like the '16's it's as simple as not buying one. Don't buy one then start bitching and moaning. That's what the test drive and doing your research is for. Maybe those whining and complaining bought the wrong truck for their needs and thats your fault. So far after trading up for driving Subarus for ten years I have no issues and I'm at around 4,000 miles.

Main reason I trade rather than sell outright.... Taxes... If I trade I only pay taxes on the difference from what i had to what I am buying. My F-150 Limited was pretty close to material trade so I didn't pay much in Sales taxes. However, had I sold the F-150 for what I got in trade, then I would had been paying State Sales tax on the Full amount paid for the Taco. Not to mention I didn't have to deal with tire kickers and people with shit credit trying to scramble to find a bank waling to give them what they are willing to spend.

Holy Moly you saved $1200 in sales tax by trading? The entire amount of sales tax I paid for my truck was about $1000! Even if I would have had owed $0 sales tax I still did probably $2000 better by doing private sale.

Anyway, congrats on the new truck and enjoy OP.

In NY, sales tax is 8%. I am getting $34K trade value... add tax savings to that means what I am actually getting for vehicle is $36,720. You should feel fortunate that OK sales tax is only 4.5% :)

The low sales tax is great. Downside are the roads :annoyed:

You are supposed to drive it around tow all muddy and dirty to show how cool your truck is. Or is that just a Jeep thing? :bananadance:
