Did a little prototyping tonight based on measurements from a couple of folks. Will swing by the dealership and do a test fit in the morning. These knobs are trickier because the plastic collar on the head unit won't allow a set screw from the side. And since aluminum isn't quite as flexible as plastic, the fit has to be better. This design uses an o-ring for tension. Point being, I may have to make a number of changes before it's dialed in. But here's where the nav-unit knobs are at as of now:

Looks good, you have a Billing's tester when you think you have them dialed in. I can take pretty pictures and write up a review :D

I tested on three trucks at the dealership, on both the regular nav head units and the JBL head units and the knobs are a perfect fit. I just need to anodize them and get them on the website. They'll be anodized black and won't have any engraving on the face. I'll post a link up in the morning.

haha OP you remind me of those overly exasperated people on tv infomercials who try to slice a tomato with a regular knife and wind up crushing the tomato and slipping on a banana peel with a defeated sigh of failure.

Ha. We try not to take ourselves too seriously around here. But seriously, I do hate the stock knobs.

That's awesome. I've been 3D printer stuff, and am considering moving up to CNC like this. Can you recommend any sites that sell reasonably modern, well priced equipment like this for a hobbyist?

For hobbyist stuff, if you need to cut metals, I'd say the Tormach machines are a good value. Or if you're electronically-inclined you can convert a benchtop mill into cnc for a few thousand dollars. I bought my first machine five years ago for $3500. It was slow and not all that accurate but it allowed me to prototype designs. Machining equipment is like race car stuff...well made and really expensive :)

It's easier than ever nowadays to learn this stuff on your own. Not easy, but at least the information is accessible.
