I have a 06 Tacoma wth 1grfe engine and 6 speed manual. It just turned 150,000 miles. At about 120 I replaced the clutch myself but I was broke and used in inexpensive clutch just to get by. My truck as lso has a fabtek 6" suspension lift and 35x12.5 r 17 tires on it with the frame mods for no rubbing . That cheap clutch didn't last long and now I bought a 2nd stage couch and throw out bearing sleeve kit from urd. Get everything apart and try to pull the flywheel to put the new one on and it won't come off. Sf I I work at it a bit and finally it removed. Get the new one on and clutch back together everything torqued to specks try to start it and he starter goes clunk. I put a socket on my crankshaft pulley and I can't budge the engine. It is completely seized. Where do I go from here? It was running fine when I turned it off ..

Sounds like something related to the flywheel is contacting the engine block

Sorry in advance if this is stupid, I haven’t done a taco clutch in a long time, but, is it possible to install the flywheel reversed?

The FSM says to install the flywheel and “2 Spacers”.
    Did you install the spacers?

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Your engine is not seized, you just have something installed incorrectly or parts that don't like each other. When I was 16 I had this mint 4x4 S-10, 4.3 that I got off a retired guy with 30k miles on it. The truck was perfect and I decided to change the radiator hoses for no apparent reason. When doing so I remember the coolant dripping out out of the bottom of the water pump so I stuffed a rag into it. It was one of those paper rags with like fishing line in it. Then I get done, go for a drive and the truck starts getting a little hot. I was like, hey no big deal. Probably an air bubble. Then when it got to 230 degrees I was like. OH SHIT! That rag. Never could get that motor to not overheat after that because it sent that rag all through all the ports of the engine and head. That was a fuckup! You just have to tear it all apart and see what is pissed off at each other.

Sometimes that's how you learn :anonymous:

When I was greenhorn working at Firestone after school, I drained the center differential on a Subaru forester thinking it was the oil pan. Overfilled the crankcase by 4.5 qts and sent it down the road. That one came back on a hook lol

Hopefully the bolts were not too long and cracked the engine case…or bent the flange on the crankshaft.

While building a racing engine, I did this. You want to get as much bolt holding the flywheel on the crank because of the tremendous stress there but I went a few millimeters too far. When I tried to start the engine, the too long bolt got wedged on one of the engine block's casting ridges and locked the crank. I was glad the new racing engine wasn't seized, but a lot of extra work for a dumb mistake.

Update... I pulled it all apart to double check everything . With the flywheel off I still can't turn the crankshaft. The bolt are new and they are a smidge shorter than the old ones. Could I have damaged the rear main bearing while attempting to remove the old flywheel?

    is it in neutral
With the truck secured to not roll away

actually dumb question the trans is out so nvm

clockwise from the front crank bolt
It is a bigger engine. And spark plugs in creating compression resistance. So that will at least make it harder to turn.

you can measure which bolts go to what hole. Or if you know their order paint mark them. Or use a cardboard box. Poke holes in it with a screwdriver. Push the bolts in there to keep track of position. And write with a sharpie which way is up and from what way facing you look at the cardboard (from rear)

I feel like it normally takes a significant event to actually sieze the engine that you’d be aware of. Like hydrolocking. Or running dry without oil seizing the pistons.

Is there a chance that you ran the battery low when doing the clutch?
With the spark plugs in, it takes a good bit to turn the engine.
Maybe the wire to the starter got left loose. At this point, I think your problem might be something simple.
Or more simple than a clutch.

when i first took it apart to replace the clutch I couldn't get the flywheel to come off.. the bolts were out and it would spin independently on the motor. I had to really fight with it to get it removed which involved to a bit of side to side rocking. I think i damaged the rear main bearing. I don't really have the facilities to pull it apart to that far. I'm just going to tow it somewhere that can figure it out.

Rocking it side to side messed up the rear main bearing?
Did you do the rocking with a hammer?

    Something just does sound right.
I can’t figure out how you’d mess the rear main up with out putting some effort into it.
    Like……..really hammering on it.
