In 2 years I have has zero problems with my 17 OR. Auto works fine and have never needed crawl control. The OR suspension is designed to absorb bumps while the Sport is designed to handle better.

Sounds like a reasonable option to me.

I too prefer simple and straightforward, especially if it will do what I need and it's a long term keeper. With a good set of tires and a skilled driver, any 4wd Tacoma should go where ever your non-locked Jeep took you, barring a physical dimension issue. (approach/departure, width, etc)

And you can find OR suspension take offs cheap from those who can't live w/o their truck being leveled or lifted, (because mall curb stops are rugged) Swap that on an have a bit nicer ride than the std SR bits.

Bet you got way more 'thoughts' than you expected? Even though way too many of them are pretty pointless.

I mean sadly those are the same ones raising the soft ass generation lol. Don't want soft kids? Don't pamper em. Make em work for what they want. My dad always told me "I don't care what you buy as long as you use your own money for it." And that is how I ended up starting to mow lawns at 12 and still do it to this day as a side hustle. Its kept me debt free and allowed me to buy a lot of toys.

Even as a parent who doesn’t pamper their kids , the school system is killing my parenting. The hippie ass bunch of bullshit my sons are taught in school is what is making them soft. A bunch of liberal hipster m’fers teaching and running the schools. Or..... Well I won’t get into the rest of all what goes on. Like making white kids, especially the boys feel like they were born in the wrong pretty much. I’m never surprised when I see school shootings anymore. The kids are going nuts due to the trash shoved down their throat Mon-Fri

I just wish schools also taught things like money, taxes, retirement, etc.

We fall into this cycle of going to school, to go to college, to get a job, to make money, but no where along the way do they actually teach you about money.

We are taught so many things that are irrelevant.

I think over half of a school day is a waste and wish they’d start teaching more life skills. Instead, we get things like common core math.

The problem is that qualified teachers aren't given the freedom or time to actually teach. The school system tells them what they are to teach each day and how to teach it without being allowed to modify to each student's needs. Then, they are not given enough undivided time to do it. In no other profession does an employee with a masters or doctor level degree in that field have so many restrictions put on them. Their hands are tied so tight, they can't do their job. Oh, and the ones at the district level bossing the teachers around are the ones with lesser education degrees, that couldn't cut it in the classroom, and don't have any idea what they are doing.
Sorry for going off topic, but I work in schools everyday and see the reality.

The 2020 auto transmission is much better. And the 4Runner has less cargo space.

Right but again I think a lot of people buy trucks just to have a truck. I use mine for work etc, but if I didn't need it, 4runner all the way. I used to have a 4runner with a box on top and it was the best adventure vehicle!

Ummmmmmm. The transmission in the 2020 Taco is the same. They and my 19 are just better programed. The transmission in the trucks are completely fine. Lol

Alright, I'll clarify. I test drove both the 19 and 20. I didn't have a problem with how the 19 shifted, but the 20 felt it was shifting at a better time with overall better acceleration. Plus, my 2020 will be green! You will NEVER hear me b*tch about a Toyota. My life experiences have taught me there is nothing out there better than a Toyota.

Now, back to the "off topic" topic. Yes, there are some bad teachers out there. And the other teachers know who they are. The problem is its too hard to get rid of them once they're in. Not only do I hear it from the teachers that I meet on a regular basis, I get an earful every evening when the wife (Dr. teacher) gets home. I'll be glad when she retires in a couple of years.

2019 Tacoma Off-Road auto, double-cab, long bed. I opted for the premium tech package, sunroof, leather, etc. as well. 5 months and 5500 miles later and I'm enjoying it very much

I skimmed through this thread because I'm slacking off at work but the whole spill about 3rd gen "automatic transmission sucks"... they all do. I've driven 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gens.. although the 3rd is probably the worst(because 6 gears duh!) it is not terrible. Mine doesn't hunt as bad as everyone is saying but it does from time to time.. after living with it for a few days.. I've gotten used it and it drives quite nicely. Look when you pair a small engine with 6 gears, that's what happens. I live in the PNW and there are varying grades all over and I'm not complaining at all.

You can be happy with either SR5 or Off-road models, hoping in both you'll find it's practically the same thing. The CRAWL control is a gimmick. I've used it a small handful of times just for testing but definitely not needed.

I find that people have mixed reviews regarding air vs. electric locker. When I regear, I plan on adding an air locker. factory locker on my OR can get finicky meaning I would have to push the button a couple of times or switch from drive to neutral back to drive then push the button. I feel the air locker is more on-demand and less fuss.

SR5 is just a regular key and offroad get the smart key, which I love.. but Toyota's smart ass only has it for the driver side front. not a big deal.. but I like hopping in and out and not having to reach for a key or anything

Offroading in an auto you'll have to drop it in Neutral or Reverse, unfortunately. The autos have auto hill assist(or whatever it's called) and will likely engage if you try to roll back in Drive.

If you can save some money with the SR5 and don't care for the extra bells n whistles opt for the SR/SR5 and build until your heart's content.

Just a quick list I put together from the top of my head

    Pros:
    • Toyota reliability(number 1 reason for purchasing)
    • Resale value(number2)
    • Best looking gen (IMO)
    • Nicest interior by far compared to other gens
    • I love the radar cruise control.. makes short hwy commutes soo much more pleasant

    Cons:
    • Toyota trucks are some of the most basic trucks you can buy.. but you don't buy it for the bells and whistles.. more for the reliability
    • No android auto/carplay if you don't have have a 2020 model
    • Fixed height seats unless you get 2020s I'm 5'8" short torso, long legs.. no one can sit behind me if they're taller than me
    • Car seats in the rear cramped.. less than ideal
    • MPGs kinda suck 15mpg lifted 2.5 inches on 33inch 10 ply tires.. so yeah I avg 19/20 when it was all stock.. but who leaves a truck stock(unless you're boring)
    • Could use a re-gear to 4.88s/5.29s to bring back some mpg and power due to bigger/heavier tires
    • Tailgate doesn't lock from the factory
    • JBL entune "premium audio" sucks.. replaced the speakers last week and looking to add amps and better sub
None of these cons really made me want to trade it in for something else.. I think it's a pretty badass truck nonetheless.

    Good luck!
