I might have goofed

I had less than a 1/4 of a tank of fuel in my 2011 Taco and put a 5 gallon can of gas in. I thought it might have had some water in the can as it ran rough and blew out white smoke for about 20 minutes. Sometimes it ran fine at 2-3k rpm's other times it was rough and coughed like it had a lot of back pressure. This can used to have diesel in it and I don't know if it was residue and water or a full 5 gallons of gas. Need advice from anyone who is more mechanically inclined thamn I am. Thank you in advance.

 

How many miles did you drive it that? I would siphon it all out right away and put some fresh gas in it with a fuel system cleaner.

 

Less than 5 miles and let run for 30 minutes.

 

Drain the tank. Don't be surprised if the pump is damaged

 

yeah......i would drain the tank and start fresh. you might of damaged your injectors

 

I would also add some seafoam in the gas and through the brake booster to help clean everything out. This will cause the exhaust to puff out a ton of white smoke, but it's normal with seafoam.

If you're not sure how to do any of this, have it towed to a mechanic and have them professionally clean out the fuel system.

Sounds like you had diesel in that can instead of gas, drain the tank, put fresh gas in it, and I bet it will be fine.
