I went that route for about 10 months. In the end, I missed having a bed, and the cargo space in the 4Runner is seriously lacking (it's a lot shorter than a short bed Tacoma).

That makes sense when you think about it. I guess a canopy would be the most secure route then?

Probably, and it would have TONS of cargo space.

Try to get a cheapie cover and see how you like it. ie the Truxedo Truxport, Tyger Trifold or Tyger roll up, should all roughly be $300 or less.

For my first truck, I went about three or four years before getting a cover. During that time, I used to think about how it didn't make sense having all that space in the back but didn't feel free to use it because it wasn't secure. Getting a tonneau cover let me use that space.

When I bought the Tacoma, a tonneau was a have to have and I ordered one immediately after buying the Tacoma.

The way I describe midsized crew cab short beds (my previous truck) is that it can do everything, just not anything really well. It was my primary family hauler, even though it may not be the most comfortable or most spacious. It was able to haul the majority of things I wanted to, even though the five foot bed was frustrating at times. I've been able to get through spots that other vehicles were having issues with. And while the size was kind of big, it still was able to fit in some spots just right.

I kind of thought about other options when buying the Tacoma but in the end didn't want to give up those things. I guess a difference might be when I bought my first truck, it was during a time where I was regularly renting trucks and vans or asking people with pick up trucks for help. So it's really nice to have one always easily available and not have to plan or coordinate anything in advance. Nowadays I might not make full use of the pickup to justify it having one and is why I was considering getting something else. But for me the few times it comes in handy makes it worth it.

Also for myself, laptops and kids backpacks I stuff in the cab. My kids feet aren't quite reaching the floor yet and usually there's an empty seat when doing after school pickup where we can use that floorspace. Things sliding around the bed is an issue. I've thought about getting a bed mat but I also want to be able to easily slide things in and out of the bed plus use the bed to haul dirty things. You can get one of those $20 bar cargo dividers to keep things from sliding all the way to the back of the bed. and use the cleats and rings on the floor to tie down your things to try to keep in place near the tailgate. But anything fragile, valuable or you don't want to get damaged, I would keep in the cab.

I’m experimenting with a secure, waterproof storage solution that does not take up bed space:

I use a truck cap. This way I can still carry big things, throw firewood in there, etc... but I still have a large covered area if needed.

This ^^^ . I sometimes wish I had a shell, but my sub-$200 Tyger rollup allows full access to the bed with no blockage of rear visibility (unlike tri-folds) in seconds, but keeps things covered and clean. Secure? Nothing is 100% secure, but out of sight, out of mind, and I live in an area with chronic car break-ins. Waterproof? Eh, it’s not perfect, but no worse than my shell was, despite attempts to seal the bed.

I had a folding tonneau cover on my 2015. It was not 100% watertight, so I kept things in plastic totes with lids in the bed. This worked well for me.

I switched to a 4runner and love it, but the Taco was better for hauling things.
