Hello I am a newbie and I found this page while surfing the internet. I am in the Orlando Florida area and I need a tuneup on my 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder. The truck also makes a shreiking noise every so often but when I turn the A/C off the noise stops. I am hoping the tuneup will improve gas usage. Any help would be appreciated. Please no crooks I've had my share of bad auto mechanics in the past. Thanks for honest assistance in advance. Regards

How many miles on your truck? When and what are the last things you had serviced? A "tune up" could mean a lot of things, but if it's been more than about 30,000 miles you'll most likely want new spark plugs, definitely new oil/filter, maybe a new air filter. Maybe new ignition wires for the spark plugs as well?

Possibly new belts or just tighten the current belts, that's most likely what is making your noise and also the reason it stops when the A/C is turned off.

Rotate your tires, and also check the spare tire's air pressure and make sure the cable and pulley system for the spare is well lubed.

Possibly lube your drive shaft u-joints.

Thank you for your response. The truck has 225,000+ miles. It has not had a tune up in a very long time. I just had brakes and router and two new front tires.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Hmmm, 225,000 miles on a 3RZ or 2RZ with questionable previous maintenance means it is probably time for a valve adjustment as well.

Im not to familiar with the 2.7 or the 2.4 engines.. but maybe you have a bad A/C pulley?
Also dont forget to change your Fuel Filter! That helps with MPG as well. As well all your Air Filter.

Shrieking when the A/C is on is either the belt, the tensioner pulley bearings or the compressor clutch bearings.

Belt and tensioner pulley are cheap. Compressor clutch, not so much.
