TOOOOOTally NOT trolling lol. I'm still learning from the bottom about my truck. No shit, the Rivertown Toyota dealership near Fort Benning, GA told me I needed new rear rotors and calipers. I shit you not. I even still have the paper somewhere saying I need to replace the rear rotors, leaf springs (handling it), and CALIPERS. I feel they are a money grubbing, uninformed dealership. Regardless, my rear breaks are going out. They squeak sooooo badly, and I've had them slip three times over/for around 2 months, now. RIGHT after I posted this, I went to the local auto zone and asked if I could get a price for new rear calipers. The dude had the same responses/looks at me that you all have. -_-...Never go to that dealership. So many bad things occurred. ANYHOW, (GOD LORD, this has been a struggle), change out calipers with drums/shoe and same question. Sorry for the confusion, you're welcome for any entertainment derived :/ ^_^.

Outside chance you have a leaky Wheel Cylinder; just a drip destroyed rear brakes on my 00 Sienna, but $600 for a new setup and it was ready to go (110,000 13 years). No need to replace the drums (Clean and turn) or most other parts; just a brake bleed. As you likely have abs, don't want just any old fool d!cking around with it...

I don't know about mind blown, but it's always a refresher when I hear the numbers people throw at my pipe dreams lol. I know I can't just go willy nilly all over this truck without aid, as well as put myself and it up for the Baja races in a week. I have four years left in the Army still, so I'm thinking about using that time to do all the work and learning on it I possibly can. For now I'm just starting to get ready to do my first bit of maintainence her. I'm starting to think I may need to second guess what the dealership even said was wrong with my truck. It doesn't squeal when I press the brakes. It only does when I start to move from a stop. -_- I'm starting to think THIS: http://www.buyautoparts.com/buynow/2007/Toyota/Tacoma/Power_Steering_Rack/80-01097_R.html is the culprit due to 2 different off-road savvy friends with the same diagnosis. Any tips how I can check to see which it is?

the best rear brake replacement are OEM toyota parts. chances are the drum is fine you might just need new shoes, piston inspection, park brake cable adjustment, reassembly

also the rear brakes are the ''same rear brakes as any internet search in setting up and adjusting rear drum brakes''...old school is the best in rear drums. the only thing unique to the tacoma is how the park brake cable assembly is routed and balanced, and even that is brake-skool 101

and drums have advantages which apply to the tacoma....vs discs....read about the advantages and disadvantages of both...

about rallying ? you mentioned it....you maybe need some more time understanding the tacoma front to back before you consider putting it in a severe high-speed offroad environment, because you WILL break stuff and will need to replace it in the woods. guaranteed. if you are asking about drum brakes now, perhaps you should learn everything else about a tacoma as well. protip: a tacoma is not nearly ready to do any true rallying unless you toss $15,000 of bits at it, not including beadlocks and tires...that is an additional 2 grand. you can go cheaper or more expensive or just buy a rig already set up.
you need shocks that can handle hits and the heat from repeated pumping, rock protection, roll cage...the list goes on.

...the stock tacoma is ready to go anywhere offroad at crawl or slow speeds but no where near able to take rally-speed hits without blowing stuff apart.

I'm not going to be putting anything in immediately. I can't really do work at a fast pace. Due to being relatively poor. I can, however, continue to save money and say, put $15000 into the truck over 4 years. Right now, I just have these issues: Needs new rear leaf springs, new rack & pinion AND/OR rear brakes, I'd like to flush the transmission, annnddd...that's about it. Just focusing on the squealing noise currently.

OP, someone at that dealer saw you coming and they are going to butt rape you. I don't know everything but I you need advice, ask me, I will help where I can and search the forums too.....

Some stealerships will tell you what ever the f^&k they want.
