This takes a little while to wade through. So, TLDR. I left my 2023 V6 engine running, got out, and tried to set the alarm. That engine is quiet!:)

When I was a kid in Illinois, our family car was a 1956 Nash Ambassador with a Packard engine. It was durn near impossible to hear it idling. My mom took me to the zoo circa 1961. She paid for parking, and then set about finding a space and getting all the zoo visit stuff ready. We spent the day looking at the animals and returned to the car finding a note saying, "You left your motor running. Your keys are at the check-in."

I swore I would never do anything so spectacularly strange, until I did. Sorry, Mom. FWIW, she died at 93, a long time ago.

Of course she would have forgave him. :)

That was a different era. People were nice!

Nowadays someone would have stolen the car.

When I was a kid… my aunt was boiling some hot dogs, realized she was out of buns, and went to the store. My cousin and I arrived at the house to discover the whole house was filled with a strange blue smoke. We later found the charred remains of the hot dogs still on the stove.

No need to apologize - just make sure you raise a glass and thank her for the memories. :proposetoast:

I can't count how many times I had to run over to my moms to change a lightbulb, put a battery in the smoke detector, 'show' her how to use the remote control, how to play a dvd (then 2 hours later how to shut it off) etc, etc.
I miss every moment of it now that she is gone.
Love your mother - no matter what!!!

"Spectacularly strange". Love this choice of words.

Since, we're calling it strange: I was once running late for class in college. I whipped into the parking garage, grabbed my stuff, and beat feet to class. I went to three classes; gone for hours. Came back to find my vehicle still unlocked and running. I felt so spectacularly strange. Couldn't believe I did something that strange.

The more I thought about it though, the less surprised I was that it wasn't stolen. It was a '98 Caravan that I'd bought from my parents for $3k; less than half of the KBB value at the time. Windows were totally blacked out; had some strange times in that van. Apart from being a completely undesirable set of wheels, I'm sure that walking up on a blacked out minivan running in a dark college parking garage...it probably looked to be occupied.

If you live long enough, you’ll make silly mistakes.
I’ve asked myself many times, “How did someone make a mistake like that?”
Only to do the same thing, years later.

OP said his Taco is as quiet as a ‘56 Nash. Loves his Mom, too. My Mom has dementia. I don’t think she ever had a Nash. The OP said his Taco is as quiet as a ‘56 Nash.

No moms were involved or harmed in this story, but I’ll play ‘stupid things I’ve done for $500 Alex’.

More than once, I’ve walked into a gas station and bought a Starbucks frap in a bottle and set it on a rung of the Gobi ladder I had on my FJ, proceeded to fill up my gas tank, then drove to work. Sometimes, I’d notice it in the rear view mirror at about 80mph on the highway. Sometimes I’d wonder where it was and find it when I came out after work. I’m sure more than a few on the highway got a kick out of laughing at me.

The matter with the Nash is pretty simple. 1955 and early 1956 Ambassadors came with Packard V8 engines and Packard Ultramatic automatic transmissions. (The Nash contract with Packard fell apart in the middle of the 1956 model year.) Packard made it a point of corporate policy to build cars that were q u i e t. That design started with the engine and carried through the exhaust and mountings. So Packard's emphasis on quiet running passed through to the Nash top-of-the-line Ambassador. Even when I was little and could hear a cricket fart, I had trouble hearing that engine. And if I had, I was told to STFU.

In a later incident, I was walking in a parking lot in western Arizona circa 2004. I heard the sound of tires moving. I looked around and saw an elderly driver backing a weather beaten 1954 Packard out of a space. It was about as quiet as a modern electric car.

So for me to say that the 2023 Tacoma V6 is quiet, and to compare it to the sound of a Nash with a Packard engine, is praise for Toyota.

I visited the Packard museum in Warren, OH a few months ago. Amazing history on the Packard family, and it was surprising how many automotive innovations they had.
