I'd drive it, if you have problems let insurance deal with it. But I'm a dumbass so there's that.

If you just shut the fuel door with the cap hanging out, then that probably wouldn't have left much tether to bang around as others have mentioned.
I know when our Tacoma's are parked in the garage there is some type of pump sound running. Perhaps this is the diagnostic mode for leaks and why you didn't get an error code. Darn it, I could think of someone on here who would know but space usernameo_O

I can worry myself silly over things that might or might not have happened.

Just put the cap back and drive it until you notice a problem. :notsure:

Yeah. I have triple A and was thinking of just spending a few hundred to have this done. Better to be safe than sorry

Just drive it. If someone put something in it it’ll start running funny and you then shut it off. You’re not going to blow it up or anything.

I’m guessing you don’t need the fuel pump warranty work.

    OP,

Sorry that happened to you. I know how maddening that can be. And, truth is stranger than fiction so it is entirely possible that you were tired from the long drive, pinched the gas cap in the fuel door so it didn't move and you just never noticed it. We've all been on long road trips where something like that could happen. Question -- look at the plastic cord that affixes to the gas cap. Do you see a pinch mark where the door may have closed? That could tell you.

Okay, you are where you are at this point. Probably okay but if you are a better safe than sorry person, as I am, I would pump it out all the way. Not a hard thing to do really and a mechanic may do it for you. How much gas do you have at this point left in the tank?

Great idea regarding pinch mark! Will check tomorrow. I have about half a tank left I imagine.

    Worth checking.

Honestly, with that much gas left in the tank you have two choices -- run it out or maybe ask a good local mechanic for their help. If it were a few gallons, I would probably try it myself but with that much gas it could get messy in a hurray. But that is just me and my skill set. :)

Good luck tomorrow ... see if there is someone local who can pump it out ... just for peace of mind. And please report back. I am hoping you find a kink in that plastic cord and then you know it was just a failure to put the cap back. Fingers crossed for you.

Anyone who has been sleep deprived will know. I once drove like a hundred miles with a thermos left on the roof of my car that got wedged into the roof rack. Didn't notice it until my kid wondered why is was raining out his window only ... ! :)

it is possible. The evap emissions check occurs after you shut the vehicle off and it’s been sitting for 6 hours.

Thanks. I wasn't very clear on my comment about the pump running; I assume it's a pump and pulling a vacuum. And not all the time when it's sitting in the garage.
But that should give the OP a little relief about possibly driving with the cap off.

If someone put something in your tank, wouldn't they shut everything back up so you would drive it causing the issue to manifest?

    I mean, that's what I would do...

And a thief that closes the fuel door but doesn’t put the cap back on?

Odds are you just for got to put the cap back on. If it were me. I would put the cap back on and drive the truck.
But I’m not you. You do what ever you think is best to bring you peace.

I had the same thought! :)

OP; get it pumped out if that is what it's going to take for you to get a good nights sleep. But this really is some serious paranoia on display here.
