I ordered LT265/70R17 E rated tires. Is E rated too much? Keep or cancel the order?

This is where it is hard to tell without actually doing it and comparing the two. Everyone drives different and has different perspectives. I asked around on this and most people just said something like "Maybe a little at first but now I barely notice it" in regards to acceleration and braking. Some people just aren't sensitive to it or the way they drive, don't notice or care.

The reality is, regardless of if someone cares or not, is that heavier will:
    • Take more power to accelerate
    • Wear out brakes faster and have longer stopping distance
    • Will "roll" better and coast longer when you take your foot off the gas (I actually like this and do notice it - helps with MPG say when rolling up to a red light.
    • Decrease MPG
    • Is harder on the transmission
To what extent? No idea, but it is just common sense.

Tread life? Tough to say. Probably depends more on weight of vehicle and tire/terrain.

OP< no one has really asked this and I don't see that you have supplied it. What is your goal with the tire upgrade? How do you plan to use the truck?

Ive always ran with the same E’s that OP ordered for off-roading over rocks also, and always thought the load rating is misleading for items that are touching the ground as the truck is not carrying them. But it also takes mass and momentum into account for acceleration and deceleration (braking). The safety margin built into that rating has always been OK for me, and I don’t live in a State that weighs or inspects my truck per their registration requirement, otherwise all my armor plating, spare tank, RTT, topper and other sht would have to go also :bananadance:

A tire’s weight has only a small effect on its efficiency. A tire’s efficiency is mostly a function of its rolling resistance and at higher speeds it’s aerodynamic resistance. In any case, there are far too many variables at play to answer your question.

My personal experience with my 2 sets of tires (P265/70r16 good year wrangler adventures and LT255/85r16 (E) dick Cepek extreme country) is 1-2 mpg (5-10%).

I lost 3+ mpg going from the original equipment LTX 2's to GY Ultra Terrain (load C, same size ). Can't imagine a range E being much worse.

They won’t let me cancel the order so I’m going to keep them I guess. They are great tires and that was never the issue. My only concern is how many mpg I might loose and how much acceleration and deceleration will slow down with 52.9 lb tires compared to 45 lb, 46 lb, 48 lb tires when I’ll have a 1.1” front lift. Maybe it won’t be too noticeable.

don't get E-rated tires. way too much tire, too heavy, and will ride like a dump truck. it will noticeably slow down your truck. i run P-rated tires and have done lots of off-roading over rocks, driven over glass bottles, mangled steel, and have yet to have a single puncture in 16,000 miles.

yea, rotational weight is a big factor in acceleration

I have been running E-rated on all my trucks without a flat or failure since the 90's. My Tundra has Nitto Ridge Grapplers 12 ply F-rated. Where I live in the mountains there is not a 1/2 mile of straight or flat road. The ride is not car like but never had a reason to complain about the durability or performance. I also gave up on gas mileage a long time ago. We are talking about trucks after all.

You’ll be fine. It’s not what I would call an optimal tire for your use case, but it’s not going to ruin your truck by any means. I’ve been running my LT tires since spring. I should have swapped them out for my winter/road tires a while ago.

I ran P285/70r17s on my '13. I got 16's on my '20 because the wheels I wanted sell out fast and I didn't want to wait for another run of 17's to come out so I had to go with LT285/75R16s. Both are ATs not mudders. The LTs are heavier. That's the only difference. They ride the same on the road and don't wear any faster. Both trucks get crap mileage but I knew they would. I don't do any off-roading so can't give any opinion there.

I’ve run P rated passenger tires (aka very light tires), C rated and E rated tires on my 2nd and 3rd gen Tacos.

For normal use plus some off-road needs, C rated is the sweet spot.

P rated would be fine for a daily, E rated would be good for a hardcore off-roader, but P rated for chewed up off road and the E rated we’re brutal as a daily tire on the Taco (with varying PSI to try to improve it).

Just one more opinion to count on your journey.

How many of ya'll have chalk tested your tires for optimal pressures? If you're guessing on pressure for what you're doing you are "Assuming".

why do you think i didn't read it? E-rated tires are too heavy for a small truck.

I went with E rated K02's because I would rather have them and not need them, then need them and not have them. But the ride is a bit stiffer on the E-load tires but honestly they remind me what driving a 4WD truck use to feel like! :) And you will take a small MPG hit but I personally could care less about that.

It's fine! Buy the tires. Some dudes w super sensitive ass's on this sight. First thing I did was switch to big ko2s in E when I got the truck.
