Not having followed Toyota, but having followed the industry as a whole...

It would not surprise me if Toyota follows everyones suite and does away with it's small pick up. The Tacoma would grow to being slightly smaller than a F150 and have a V6 standard with MAYBE optional V8.

The Tundra would then become a "name package" for the 2500/3500 HD. Maybe some external cosmetic changes, maybe a different cab, but essentially the same frame. V8 would then be standard.

There's a reason Tacoma is the countries most popular compact/mid-sized truck...

why in the hell would they make the tacoma a V8? they have a Tundra.

All manufacturers must hit an average mpg rating for the fleet, which is going up to 31.6mpg by 2015.

It would also be useless to have a V8 in the tacoma, it's not a race truck, it's not built to tow 10,000lbs, so why a big gas hog of a motor?

It's already just as fast as the full size V8 trucks, with better fuel economy.
    I just got 17.2mpg with 265's, my buddy's F150 was slower, and got 9-11mpg with 33's.

    Why have a V8 in a F150 - They have a F250.

    Fleet Average - Prius (52mpg) + V8 Tacoma (20mpg) / 2 = 35.5mpg Fleet (assuming these are their only two vehicles).

Why did the Tacoma grow from a 2,500lb 80hp Pickup to nearly 4,000lbs and 240hp?

A V8 is not a gas hog if geared correctly.

Manufactures don't give a crap about aftermarket wheels. A F150 Ecoboost makes 365hp 420ft/tq, runs to 60 in 6 flat and gets 22mpg highway. Tell your budy to upgrade.

gas vs diesel, thats a whole different ball game.

do you really think it will get 20mpg? and don't lie to yourself!!!

dodge dakota, chev colorado, both small trucks with V8's, both are gas hogs, im sure if "correct gearing" was all it took, it would have been done.
The only F150 that get's good gas mileage is the V6

That is a V6 as I said above, it's also turbo charged.
    22mpg on premium gas remember.
Tacoma double cab 0-60 is 7.3 seconds, are you racing to 60mph often enough that 1.3 seconds is worth it?

    F150 5.0 is rated at 21mpg highway.

HD/SD does not automatically mean Diesel. It is a payload/tow rating. Their are 6 gas engines available for the F250.

Define "Gas Hog"? The Colorado is rated at 20mpg for the 300hp 5.3L. It's irrelevant seeing the Colorado is doomed to extinction. Dakota is already gone.

    "Worth it" implies a "cost".

Ecoboost runs on regular gas. Premium is like $2 a tank more. Your also forgetting that the F150 is nearly 2,000lbs heavier and has significantly greater capacities.

My point is not a Tacoma vs Whatever - but that Trucks across the board are growing, and their small counter parts are being axed. I don't see anything to imply why Toyota would be any different.

The current Tacoma is the size of a older Tundra. Why would you assume the next Gen would not be as large as the current Tundra? At that point, why have two vehicles that nearly overlap in price and ability?

Rated is all that maters. I'm not one to listen to stories about getting 31mpg in your Tacoma or 50mpg in a Diesel Silverado or 8mpg in a stock Mustang GT.

As I stated - it would not surprise me if the Tacoma becomes a Full-Size. It was once a compact.

Please list these "mid-size" trucks that sell like hot-cakes.

The Ranger is pushing 30 years old now and is being axed because it's replacement is near F150 size and cost. It's designed to compete with the Hilux which is also nearly F150 size and cost these days.

Who the hell cares which truck sells the best. I like the size of Tacoma and I like the 4 cylinder engine so thats what I bought. If I wanted a bigger truck I would of bought a bigger Tundra with a V8, end of story.

Shrink the truck, put in a 4 or small diesel, build 'em like they used to and call it good. Anything else is insufficient to keep me as a customer.

They would make a V8 Tacoma for the same reason they sell a V8 4Runner.

Have ya driven the new one? Works perfectly with the V6. Still my favorite vehicle I've driven to date.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did come out with a V8 Tacoma. Some of the competition already has it. I don't think they will, but it wouldn't really surprise me.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Probably, since the next generation Tacoma will likely be the size of the 2nd gen Tundra. The 2nd gen Tacoma is about the size of a 1st gen Tundra, so they may need that power to make it move in a quicker manner! Small trucks are dying out, Ranger is gone, GM is about to exit the compact truck market in 2013 I believe, Mazda trucks are gone, and I am pretty sure the Dodge Dakota has become a thing of the past, maybe the 2nd generation Tacoma will be the last Tacoma? I hope not, but you never know.

I predict, that if you want a V8 you should get a different truck.

exactly, so all of the other mid size trucks are failing, making it even easier for the tacoma to rule the mid size market.

The point I was making, is that there is no significant advantage to a V8, our trucks have plenty of power, and better gas mileage than the bigger trucks that do require a V8 to move them.
