Today I put a 2021 radio into a 2018 Tacoma. I just wanted seamless CarPlay. It works great so far.

What was involved with the installation? I’m considering doing this myself.

Just a harness, I did the same to my 2016, radio from a 2022. Whole process took less than 20min

More importantly, where did you find the head unit and how many $$$.

I’ve thought about it but OEM head units are pricey.

I was lucky to find one on facebook marketplace for a steal only $200, my cousin had better luck & found one for $150 for his SR5 on craigslist, some people just want to get rid of it since they upgraded to a bigger screen

I’ve got my JBL out of my 2017 in a box. Seems outdated when compared to my Sony with CarPlay. Anybody want it?

Got mine off of eBay for $160. A junk yard was selling it from a totaled taco… the radio works perfectly

    Same:
    Steering wheel buttons work.
    Factory Microphone works.
    Reverse Cam works.

    Different:
You'll loose the 'Eco' mpg display. Which is stupid as you can dig down into 'history' and it'll show the graph display. Just not on the Home Screen.
If you're using a USB stick for music, or playing bluetooth from you phone. The display won't show the album art while you're moving. I also feel the interface for playing music from a USB is worse. But with my phone plugged in I never use it anymore.

I don't know if a Entune 3 Nav head unit works in a Entune 2 system as they're going to be more expensive and few people have done it. In my opinion the only reason to buy and convert your truck to the newer head unit is to use the maps with Air play/Google maps.

If you dont have JBL audio all around from factory, the JBL headunit will not function properly by itself if you try

I believe in 2020 the connectors changed. I don’t believe after 2019 they are interchangeable.

If you have the JBL in your Taco and want to upgrade to a newer OEM with CarPlay and Android Auto, make sure you get the JBL head unit and the amp. The old JBL amp will not work with the newer head unit. I bought a 2021 JBL head unit from one junk yard and a 2020 amp from another junk yard. Total cost with the harness from autoharnesshouse was a little over a grand, but I wanted to stay with the OEM appearance. I regret nothing.

I think this is the exact thread I'm looking for, and I have a few questions if anyone can help:

    1) I have a 2017 JBL Taco that I want Android Auto for, and factory / OEM integration. Is the eco bit the only thing I'd lose switching over to a 2021 JBL head unit?
    2) Other than a harness what else is required (cutting, fitting, etc.?)
    3) Does this fix the rear speaker low volume / signal issue, or do I have to do something else to fix the JBL rear speaker issue that the 2016/2017 Tacos had?

    Thank you in advance.
