I'm hooked. 11 miles each way. A tad too easy. I'm bolting crap to my Surly CrossCheck every week. Lights, racks...fenders. And I hate fenders. I cruise slow so I don't get sweaty. Home is a bit of a sprint.

Moving away from SF Bay Area is turning into a home run. My old commute was 2.5 hours each way on a bad day. Quality of life.

My wife green lighted my next club ride bike since I made mine a dedicated commuter.

That's awesome! I love commuting by bike to work. I currently live 14 miles from the office and some days I can easily make it to work by bike in the same time it takes me to drive.

It's always a great feeling passing all the cars that are stuck in traffic and the bike lane is clear.

    Good for you!

Back in the gas supply shortage era of the mid 70's I put over 1k a year on a Huffy 10 speed commuting to work. Only 4 miles round trip, but in the days before bike trails and commuting were cool.

Allowed me to save gas for the GTO for weekend activities.

Son lives on a mountain on the edge of Chattanooga. His neighbor commuted a little less than that, but up and down of course. All year. Rain and light snow days too. Until he retired at 65. Then he rode to New Mexico. And back.

Oh yea, its an older Schwinn. You know, high end Walmart steel frame type.

We call him the beast. (He was a federal parole officer)

You can get a few bucks back from your employer under the bicycle commuter act by riding to and from work.

Just purchased my first road bike/commuter/hyrbid today plan on commuting to work at least once a week now.

Bike is a 2016 Trek Crossrip LTD got a great deal ( I think ) on it from my LBS. I went in looking at the trek 7.3 fx and walked out feeling my wallet on fire after I swipped my debit card on this bike. 11 mi's to work one way and not sure about bike lanes around here so I have some research to do. Any suggestions?

I'd ride to work if I could carry all my parts, ladders, tools, and didnt have to travel all of DFW.

    Congrats on the new bike!

Google maps is a great resource. They have bike routes listed on there and if you get directions you can change your method of transportation to biking and it will pick the best route based on the listed bike routes in your area. Another good bet is to talk with your LBS. If there's anyone who knows how to get around by bike it's those guys in the shop.

Just out of curiously this may be need to go my hr dept but I hate calling them because they record our conversations. But can an employer prohibit you from riding your bike to work?

They can't prohibit you from riding your bike to work but they can tell you that you have to leave your bike outside. I've heard of some companies that don't allow bicycles in their buildings but as far as getting to work, they can't tell you that you cannot ride your bike.

California's seem like a piece of cake compared to Nashville drivers. There's plenty of crashes daily. Rain or no rain.

@Newlife you'll love the crossrip I've put almost 2k on mine so far. I would love to commute to my office but too often I need to meet with customers or haul cabinets, I own a small cabinet and woodworking shop.

If they want to prohibit you from riding your bike, tell them "put me on the clock for my commute and I'll drive whatever you want to give me" lol
For me to bike it would fall somewhere between impossible and very stupid. I work 3rd shift 25 miles one way most of it highway. 70+mph:eek:

I used google maps. And asked around.

Got some great Intel. I finally just did a few dry runs on weekends. I fined tuned the route by having my wife drop me off at work. That way I could meander home working out routes with zero risk of being tardy.
