I also love my '16 TRD off-road. I have absolutely no complaints and am especially pleased with the mileage, which is the best I've ever had in a Taco (and I've owned 5 now).

Nice, I knew all of the 3rd gen owners didn't hate their trucks. Good to hear the positive group. Which is probably a bigger group than the noise making negative side.

I've been very happy with my truck as well. I gave back my quad cab 4x4 F150 company truck prior to getting this Taco. Its been a great truck so far but I only have about 2500 miles on it.

Just turned 1,000 miles. No issues to date. Really liking the truck. Not the most powerful thing on the road but gets the job done. I have other vehicles to fill the void.

Don't let the negativity get you down, the issues experienced in the most part are not common to the entire group, but negative press travels further and faster.

I am aware there *Could* be transmission fluid issues, howling diffs, and shifting issues. However, I'd imagine that most people aren't having that happen, so I rolled the dice.

Besides, I'd rather roll the dice with this truck than buy a Colorado or a Ridgeline, and the Frontiers are in bad need of an update. There's really no other choices. It was go with a brand I trust, use a brand I had and disliked, or try a new brand and see what happens.

To give you some prespective my father works at a Chevy dealership and I bought 2 of them in 2011. I've since replaced them BOTH with Toyotas (wife drives a 4runner). Here's a breakdown:

    2011 Silverado - 69,500 miles when I traded it.
Oil pan leaked - 10k miles
OnStar module died - 10k miles
Door handles broke passenger side - 25k
Door handles driver side - 30k
    Oil pan leaked - 40k
Fuel pressure sensor failed (removed fuel tank and pump) - 55k miles
    Torque Converter failed - 69k
If you had 1/4 tank or less fuel vapor would think tank was full so you had to keep "topping it off" until it worked...really freaking annoying.
Gauge cluster would randomly turn off and you'd have to reboot truck to get it back....GM didn't know what that was...maybe a short?

I didn't mention consumables like OEM Eagle LS/2 wearing out in 32,000 miles, rear shocks gone at 60k, etc.

Vehile was 2wd, OEM tires, no lift, no mods other than better head unit and backup camera and bed cover.

    2011 Equinox
Infamous Timing chain issue (engine partially disassembled to fix) - 7k miles
    Onstar Module - 10k
    Power Liftgate failure - 70k
Ecotec Motor (2.4L direct injected 4 banger) averaged 17mpg because it was wayyyy underpowered.
    Oil pan leaked - 74k
Interior compartments handles broke (no kids, easy owners...just spring kept popping out of a holder)

Trust me, vehicles have issues...the Equniox had a few frustrating ones but were covered under warranty. The Silverado had a few that weren't, but fortunately the TC was. I didn't hate them, but while waiting on the TC to get fixed in my truck I drove a 2001 Camry with 200k miles on it as a loaner from my father in law, which that car was my wife's first car when she turned 16. The difference between the brands are night and day...I wanted the Chevy because I liked the tech at the time, but I want the Toyota because I want it to last and be reliable. I'll take my chances on the Tacoma...

The best way I can express it is when I had my previous Toyotas I didn't know much about cars, but I sure learned a lot about them owning Chevys. If you like to work on vehicles, I recommend a Chevy. They are great to learn on.

Yep, exactly my point. I will say that my Silverado had a 5.3L v8 which I liked. It was easy to get to to work on, was a solid engine and made a fair amount of power. I really do believe the 5.3 is a good engine.

GM uses a software mapping for their transmissions called "Torque Management" and it was the most unenjoyable driving experience I've ever had in a vehicle. Put the truck in "Tow/Haul" mode and BAM, it comes to life. It's sad that there's a nice engine powering that thing with a transmission mapping software that totally cripples it....

I have had the same RTT on my XJ and the Grand Cherokee before. When on these vehicles the mpg dropped and the wind resistance increased very noticeably. So I knew that when I put it on the truck I wanted it to line up with the roof line to prevent this. And I am happy with my decision because the truck rides nice with the bed rack and tent on it and there was minimal mpg loss and no wind noise or resistance felt. I am planning to put on some drawers or at least a bed slide in the bed for easy access to gear. Plus the other added benefit of having it lower, not being worried about getting into garages since this is my primary DD. Another thing to consider when mounting an RTT, the zipper that holds the cover over the tent when packed goes around 3 sides. So make sure you put a little space between the cab and the tent. Having it lower also helps so you can reach everything easier. I know of a guy who has a really nice lifted Rubicon with an RTT on top. He has to carry a little ladder to use when deploying the tent. And lastly don't forget about center of gravity - the tents are pretty heavy so having the center of gravity as low as possible helps with handling and off camber situations. :) Hope that helps.

Love my 3rd Gen as well. Best car/truck I've owned. Was a little frustrated with the tranny prior to the TSB, but now that I've clocked 1500 post-TSB, this thing drives great. NO MORE GEAR HUNTING!

Again, it's somewhat a matter of perspective. I do think the transmission hunts a little, but a 6 speed + is going to do that as it finds the sweet spot. Ford/Gm developed a 10 speed, I'd imagine that will do the same. I had a 6 speed transmission on my underpowered Equinox 2.4L Ecotec and it hunted like a redneck during deer season. 80,000 miles later, it was still doing great when I dumped it. I did, however, hate that it didn't have the power to move around in traffic safely, and the Tacoma, while no 5.3L v8, moves around quite nicely.

All that is to say I think the hunting feels like other mid size engines w/ 6 and 8 speed trannies. Seeing as my dad works at a Chevy dealership and does marketing I'm constantly driving their cars, and used cars (so lots of cars) and the ones that dont hunt usually have a ton of power. The 2016 Stingray Corvettes don't hunt, it just demolishes inclines.

The pedal vibration thing surprised me, I figured the Taco was (and is) drive by wire, and I do feel the resonance, but I'd say that it's minimal and I've mostly already mentally forgotten about it. Should it feel smoother? I think it should. Is it hurting anything in my case. Unlikely. It's common to spend big bucks and sweat little stuff, it's part of the grieving process and guilt when you spend a good chunk of change. Perahps the 2017's came with the TSB or I got a decent copy, but hunting is minimal and cruise control seems to act fine. I live in a fairly flat area however...

There's certainly some valid complaints here, I 100% agree. But last night after reading about the pedal issue I went and drove my truck at 10 - 20, then at 60+, then manually shifted to keep engine RPM around 2000 - 2500 to see if it did it better or worse. Tried cruise. In the end I could say it's there, but I guess it's not bothering me that much.

To be fair the Colorado trucks drive VERY well, the interior (expect the radio dash styling) is nice. Features are good. Warranty is solid. Truck drives uninteresting, ground clearance sucks, truck looks kinda bleh, and the diesel option isn't worth $3900 for how much I really need it (Sure I want it....but don't need it). I also borrowed a 2016 Silverado and actually liked my 2011 better. They keep making the hoods bigger, I felt like i was driving a bus.

Also loving my TRD OR. Just hit 2400km (about 1500miles). Funny how many complaints I'm reading about power, sure it'd be nice if the engine was set up a bit more for a truck (more torque down low). But I have no problems merging or overtaking on the highway. I also have the manual transmission with 4.3 gears so maybe that's why I'm fine with it.

Besides when my dad needs to borrow the truck I get to borrow his '13 Boss302. Side exhaust and noise petal brings out my inner child and afterwards I can go back to driving normally :burnrubber:
