I really think it should be illegal to do anything in an automobile except drive...

If you cant handle the vehicle while doing it, Dont do it.

If however you are smart and can correctly manage the task while driving then whats the problem? Screw the phone laws, I see alot of LEOs on there phone Constantly! If they can drive while clickin around on a laptop then texting should be a breeze! HA

I saw a guy a few days ago, driving down the road...alone...doing 50-55mph...leaning over to the passenger side, wiping the inside of the windshield with a towel/rag...

he was on the shoulder from weaving more than once...he may have been drunk...or just stupid, possibly both.

If the inside of your windshield is so bad dirty, how inconvenient is it to pull over at a safe spot and clean it?

Is a wrecked car...your life...or the life of another worth the few minutes it would take to stop?

    Actually, you are correct...

I've thought about it, and part of the problem is cars are so much easier to drive today than "back in the day"

driving used to take actual work.

    many younger folks probably never drove a car with manual steering...manual brakes...manual transmission...a choke...no A/C...no power windows...no navigation...bluetooth...etc...

    btw...

I'm no "nanny state" kinda guy.

and yes there are already motor vehicle laws that would prevent much of what I proposed in the OP.

however, as noted by others...enforcement is near impossible. and self controll is all but non existent...

so, I'm old...and worn out...got my ass beat at work today (building a new home)...it's hot...I'm tired...

I'll just keep on soldiering on, and do my best to avoid the crazies.

Thanks for all yall's opinions/perspectives.

You know what Larry, all they have to do is abolish the automatic transmission. Doing this will cure many woes.

I disagree...in college I was able to smoke a cigarette, drink coffee, change the radio, and use my cell phone while driving a 5-speed.

needless to say, now that I drive an automatic I can perform open heart surgery during my commute.

Yes, but lots of people can't drive a manual at all.

Also, it forces you to pay attention to what the machine is doing and what other people are doing. You have ot be more aware.

And I need to have a bypass operation. What do you charge?

I've been on some car forums that would show large support for your proposal. :D
