i meant excecution in a general context, ...not in a morbid connotation.... think "swing... batter... batter, ...swing" ;)

i think the culmination of this thread should be a comprehensive list of all things, enumerated and unambigous, ..all things that "should" be made statutorally illegal while "driving"... let's make sure we don't leave anything out... :D

    Yeah.
What would be cool is if we could "negative rep" or "thumbs down" other drivers when they do something stupid, like putting points on their license. Too much negative rep in a period (from different people) and their license is revoked and vehicle impounded until they take a driver safety course and clean up trash on a busy highway.

    Yeah.
    OK, sorry. :(

I'm talking about road democracy, voting the idiots off the road. I don't care if people eat cereal and watch porn while they are driving if they drive reasonably well. Some people can't drive even with no distractions (other than the voices in their heads) and have no business on the road.

Guns can be harmful to innocent people.

A pencil can be dangerous in the wrong person's hand, but just like guns and driving while texting, if someone is using them dangerously then they should be stopped.

Fans have been outlawed, they can kill someone looking over the edge of a bunk bed if it hits them just right in the temple.

Wow. By no means should you be free to engage in any of those activities while drive if you wish to do so. If you were the only person on the road for miles and the only negative consequence of you distracting yourself was that you would only injure yourself, go for it. But by by no means can you take it upon yourself to do something that can potentially injure a fellow driver.

I understand you wrote "if I can do so and drive in a safe manner." but that leaves way too much grey area, and quite frankly no one drives as well as they think they do. Everyone has an overly confident opinion about their driving. I think I drive better than I do, and I guarantee you do as well.

That being said, if it distracts you or has the potential to cause harm to anyone other than you, it should be banned. And being given a ticket after the fact, like you recommend, is not going to resolve the issue. People don't think far ahead to worry about getting a ticket if or when they get into an accident due to driving distracted.

I agree there are a lot of distracted drivers out there texting on the road, every other driver is engaging in some sort of non-driving activity, but that's just a lack of enforcement. If police truly ticketed people when they saw driver's texting, especially with an outrageously high fine like $500-$750 there would be a rapid decrease. There is nothing you need to tell someone that is so important you should risk your life and most importantly someone else's.
