    Transistor radios

    Rambler station wagons

You were told to play outside or read a book - no video games, cell phones, cordless phones, remotes (for anything - oh, wait, I was the remote - "Susan change the channel" :D)

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
I remember that our first TV downstairs was pretty old and ran on vacuum tubes. The thing took several minutes to warm up. So usually you could go pee and it'd be ready by the time you got back. That and it got hot after 30 minutes and in the winter would actually warm up the area around it. Thing lasted until I was in 3rd grade then suddenly blew one evening.

I remember our first VCR too. It cost probably $1,000 in 1980's dollars. It had knobs and the tape went into the top. It had giant clunky buttons. It ate tapes too so when it got stolen, we wern't all that sad because we got a replacement that was a lot better from the insurance co.

I'd forgotten about the tape going in the top... I just remember the remote

Yellow Front was up on Broadway and Rural in Tempe right next door to SuperX and Lucky's Market.

May not mean much to a lot of people who don't know wtf I'm talking about but they were great places to romp around in as a kid. Yellow Front was kind of like a mix of Walmart, Harbor Freight and Sportsmans Warehouse. It was great. SuperX was kind of like Walgreens but more neighborhood friendly feeling. They had a slushy machine and the video game Yie Ar Kung Fu. Lucky's was a decent grocery store but they had this big Robot vending machine with toys. You could get those bird chirper things that go in your mouth. My mother hated those things.

    Nothing yet, brand new!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one!

My mom would be the first to swat my ass. Afterwards she'd say "Go to your room and wait for your father to come home." The wait was the worst part.

That depended on the State you were in (I think).

I remember making special weekend trips to Washington DC and Vermont just so I could drink at 18. I lived in NH.

The other day I saw a carton of cigarettes was around $48...I Worked at Safeway and remeber when they were $11 a carton

I used to drive around town looking for the cheapest gas b/c I refused to pay .80 cents

    GREAT TIMES!!!!!
I remember leaving the house at 8AM and my Mom or Dad standing in the drivway at 8PM yelling at me to come inside to eat dinner. Riding my bicycle 10 miles to the YMCA, playing basketball/swimming/whatever all day and riding back home. Now, I have kids who can't stay outside for more than 45 minutes without asking to go inside.

I remember get "pops" at school

I remember the best day EVER at school when we got to play DODGEBALL in gym.

I remember there was no such thing as athletic leagues that didn't keep score and there was no such thing as a PARTICIPATION ribbon. There were winners and losers and you dealt with it!!! PERIOD!! If you wanted to win, then get better!!!

I remember when a kid could get in a fight and parents and the police didn't get involved.

Exactly. You HAD to play outside and you learned to deal with winning and losing.

I grew up in VA and it was 18. I thought it used to be 18 everywhere until I moved to Pittsburgh and my Yinzer friends said it was always 21 in PA.
