Bought it in Feb 2016 for 32,303 not counting doc fee or sales tax, which was 10% off MSRP then. I sold it for 30,000 even. It has 59,658 miles. So I lost about 1% per year for 7 years. A dealer bought it off AutoTrader. My experience was many dealers were interested. Private Party buyers seem to prefer a dealer over an individual. I plan to buy a 2023 version of same truck.

Yes, I’m looking. My dealer is getting trucks but most are pre-sold. He did have 7 Tacomas on the lot last Thursday, not all TRDORs. On Saturday they had 1 left. They sell them as fast as they get them. However, 2 months ago they were marking up the TRDORs 1000 over MSRP. Now they are discounting them 1000 under MSRP. But still doing add-ons you may not want. But that was the case before the price drop. Any TRD Pro that comes in is marked up 10,000. A truck I like is about 3 weeks out.

Glad to hear they are slightly discounting some models near you. But yes, these trucks are still hugely popular despite rising interest rates and fuel prices spiking in the driving season this spring. I don’t know how many 2023 Tacoma’s Toyota plans to manufacture this year before they focus on the 4th gen. Hopefully it’s a record year for production. I would still be a little fearful that I couldn’t get what I was looking for before 2023 production is done.

My dealer knows I hate all the ad-on crap. He said he would charge me what the parts dept charges him ($895) for the $1999 fee that includes all weather mats, door edge guards, paint protector and fabric protector. Bottom line is that when you subtract the 1000 discount and add back in the 895, they sell it for 105 below MSRP. The doc fee is 790 and sales tax for the State. In my case SC tax caps at 500. So the new car sales MGR and I have an agreement , with 2 different trucks (in writing) that he will sell me the truck 105 below MSRP, plus doc fee and tax. The more expensive truck has leather interior, and sunroof . Many of the TRDORs have the multi terrain monitor package and premium audio. I don’t really want this stuff because they are so expensive. I’ll likely spend $46,000 out the door to replace what I had. Compared to my 2016 the 2023 has power driver seat std and all the safety driver assist stuff like adaptive cruise, collision, etc. And all the ones they are getting have LED lights interior and LED headlights , DRL and LED fog lights

My dealer will NOT accept an order. It’s whatever is coming.

Kahanabob, I don’t want the smaller V6 turbo. So I want to get a new one before they are gone. I saw a 1 hour interview with the chief engineer for Toyota trucks. He said the Gen 4 Crawl control will be quiet. Other than that I think the off-road driver assist features are the same as Gen 3. The brake noise in Crawl is not a problem, but some people don’t like it. So they made it quiet.

I tried 2 others in the Charlotte area. Same story. So 3 dealerships told me no custom orders.

I called outside my area and found a dealer that would do a factory order and no mark ups. I drove almost 200 miles but i got exactly what I wanted so it was worth it

Granted this was back in the fall of 2016; but I had the same experience here in Northern, VA... and EVERYTHING within 100 miles from my house had $$$$ in add-ons, most of them the BS premium package or whatever...

A member here referred me to these guys. Internet/Fleet sales manager was super cool. Struck a great deal over the phone in minutes. Got exactly what I wanted and nothing else. Might be worth a call and a drive? I've done RIC to CLT many times, not bad:

Understood, but dealers cannot order from factory, they order from distributors who order from factory. The distribution network gets all kinds of configurations from the factory and then they sell to dealers. Toyota has an extra step versus other manufacturers. Just like your "Toyota" dealer is not really a Toyota dealer. They are an independent business with a contract to sell Toyota vehicles.
The upside is the distributors have a bunch of vehicles coming in all the time of many configurations. The downside is some configurations are not available in certain regions so if you want that, you have to travel because dealers can only buy through their distributor. Southeast Toyota or Gulf States Distributors are good examples. You can't buy a Southeast Toyota Distributor Tacoma in California for example.

Speedbird, I just went to the Mechanicsville website. Looks good. They don’t add a bunch of crap you don’t want. A few of the TRDORs had step boards installed. I don’t want to lose the ground clearance associated with those. But they have some without them. Also, several had the facrory Tonneau cover which I like. I’ll call them tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. Looks like about 4-5 hours
